Clear pint glass

Royal Oak Summer Wit was on tap and served in a pint glass The body is pale, cloudy and has an orange gold hue. The head was minimal and dissipated quickly to a thin film on top. The nose and taste were very similar. Summer Wit is light and crisp with a citrus aroma and flavor. Orange peel, coriander and a little lemon was noted. Carbonation was on the light side for a Witbier and the ale has a light body.

Overall, Summer Wit is just an average/standard Witbier that makes for a summer brew.

This was served on tap at Royal Oak Brewery in Royal Oak, Michigan. It arrived in a generic pint glass, showing a cloudy, pinkish-orange coloring, with a quickly dissipating white wisp of a head. No appreciable lacing was noted, other than a film across the liquid’s top. Carbonation appeared to be minimal. The aroma came across as overly basic, with wet wheatiness, coriander, orange pulp, heavy sulfurs, wet toilet paper, lemon cleaner, mild tannic bitters, and bronze. The taste followed, offering little else to liven things up. Here we experienced heavy wheatiness, toasty pales, foamy plastics, orange and lavender oils, candied walnuts, white sugar, harsh lactic acidity, citric juiciness, candy corn, medicinal phenols, and dense metallics. The body was medium, and the carbonation was underdone. There was little cream, froth, smack, glug, or foam, and the mouth and throat were left sticky and dried, like after drinking too much lemonade. The abv was appropriate, and the beer drank back okay.

Overall, as our second offering from them for the evening, this probably marked the low point for tasting. As was mentioned above, everything about this beer seemed rushed or underdone. The aroma was washed through and depressingly standard, while the flavoring fought between cloying sugars and intense synthetic citrics and acidity, all while the wheat and spice fell into purgatory. The aftertaste did linger, however, providing cleanliness to the palate. Drink this one closer to tap or cellar temperatures as well, because as it warmed it developed a sort of seashore, sewage smell, making it less desirable. That sounds really harsh, but all we’re meaning to say is that we found that a lot of the components here just didn’t work well together. Next.

A really nice little witbier from a pretty decent brewpub. As with so many American takes on the witbier style, the color is far too golden to be true to form. It's a subtle difference, but I think it's an important one. Definitely some prominent orange aromas and flavors. Very light bodied. Not complex but very refreshing. Good, standard wit.
