On tap at Newhall Refinery in Newhall, CA.
Pours a clear copper with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, earth, wood, and herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with malt, wood, and spicy herbal hop flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with nice wood qualities in the aroma and flavor, but I am not getting any bourbon whatsoever.

Consumed 07/31/09.
Clear, deep reddish/brown brew with a slightly undernourished white head.
Fleeting whiffs of west coast hops (pine and grapefruit) mixed with the deep caramel malt aroma.
Flavor is big and bold: bourbon is dominant, with oak a close second. Semi-sweet caramel malts segue into significant, almost medicinal hop character. Closing in on Stone-style barleywine territory.
Mouthfeel is a bit still, though proper otherwise.
One of these will do you just fine - tasty and relatively high in ABV.
