First had Valencia Honey Wheat at Wolf Creek Restaurant & Brewing, Valencia, Calif., on draft into chalice.

Valencia Honey Wheat is a 6.80 ABV "White IPA," brewed with orange peel and local honey, according to the brewery. This wheat beer does have a bitter character, complemented by the (presumably) honey sweetness.

On tap at Newhall Refinery in Newhall, CA.

Pours a hazy honey orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Thick swaths form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of grain, wheat, cracker, pepper, and grass aromas. Taste is much the same with grain, wheat, pepper, and grass flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop and earth bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is quite bitter and aggressive for a honey wheat beer.

Serving type: on tap.

Nice full flavored traditional wheat. Barely detectable tinge of honey and orange peel give this beer a round body. Refreshing and subtle palette. Enjoyed it very much.

Consumed 07/31/09.

Clear, light golden colored ale. Some visible carbonation.

Smells mainly of honey with light citric hops.

Flavor is stronger than expected with honey being a bit heavier and hotter than you'd think. Tangy, sweet oranges and a little bitter hop bite at the finish.

Somewhat thin in the mouth, but not distressingly so.

Surprisingly assertive and drinkable, this ale has its ABV well-hidden. I'd drink a pint of this any time.
