Barrel aged barley wine! Sign me up, my favorite style vintage 2014

A-wistful: semi opaque chestnut with small head, fine lacing

S-wow: leathery old caramel toffee, faint whiskey and barrel

T- whoops: not correlative to smell. Blast of burnt sugar, and bitterness. Hops in background clash with the roasty ( burnt) foreground. Not one dimensional, but close.

M- wimpy. Thin, lacking body and effervescence

O- waiting: going to age my other bottle and hope for some cohesiveness to develop. It's fair, but not recommended. I poured the last glass into the BBQ pork I was making

In review is a 2011 bottle.

A - Pours a nice dark amber color with a slight creamy head that dies down to a thick lacing, very viscous and sticky when the glass is swirled.

S - Brown sugar, light molasses, whiskey, candy toffee, light wood and citrus.

T - Whiskey is forefront, oak, candy toffee, light colored molasses, and light citrus on the end with a slight tinge of tang.

M - Heavy medium body and sticky.

O - Aged nicely, purchased this bottle at the end of 2011 when I was out for San Diego Beer Week.

Thanks to rawfish for sending this my way, a beer that squatted on my wants list for quite some time. 12 oz. waxed bottle broken into with brute force.

The pour is a dark orange with a surprisingly relevant head & zero sediment, which surprised me, I have no idea why. Nose hits the barleywine nail on the head, caramel, sweetness, & some more nice caramel.

Serenity is no doubt a different beast now that it's been resting quietly for so long. Follows through on the promise of the nose: a caramel bomb. Toffee, green apple, touch of oxidation that doesn't detract. Whiskey is only a gentle tickle in the back of the throat. Much more lively than I expected, & so easy to drink.

Perhaps not fair to be rating a beer this old, but it sounds like the barrel aging was pretty subtle to begin with & it still is, rendering a warmth in the chest more than any overt taste. Good barleywine.

Manzanita's first anniversary beer from 2011. Tried on 1/14/2013.

Since I didn't get the chance to try this fresh, I'm not sure what the comparison would be like. But I'm guessing some age has mellowed it out. Pours a hazy light copper with little head. It's pretty smooth for a barleywine, with a nice sticky mouthfeel. The 12.1% ABV isn't very evident. Heavy caramel flavor. Only a light hint of the whiskey barrel aging. I wish I had more than a 12oz bottle! Luckily, I've heard that they're aging this again in barrels currently, and may be doing larger format bombers the next round.
