Baying Hound - "Angel's Nectar" Chamomile Honey Wheat Beer
Picked up a 22oz bomber in a trade with Dawson's Liquor in Severna Park, MD and poured it into a Tripel Karmeliet branded tulip - thanks fellas!
A: After a big pop from the bottle cap, this beer pours a hazy unfiltered blondish/tangerine hue with a massive fluffy white head that sticks around for pretty much the whole glass, leaving just a minor amount lacing in its tracks.
S: A ton of honey up front, orange blossoms, slightly earthy - most likely from the herbal tea, light pilsner style malt, with a strong biscuit/raw dough finish.
T: Very similar, but not limited to, the nose on this one. The honey comes through as the dominate flavor from start to finish, but that nice biscuit aroma comes through in the flavor as well, which lends a real nice balance to the overall flavor. The camomile is noticeable as well but in very light doses, jasmine or some other type of blossom is almost oily and adds a nice depth to this one. A lot going on here, but all the aspects seem to work together quite well.
Definitely not your average wheat beer!
M/D: The mouthful is on the lighter side of medium bodied and somewhat dry for the style which is nice. My only gripe is the carbonation - I knew from the pop of the cap that this one was going to be loaded with carbonation - my assumption proved to be true, and honestly I found it to be a bit distracting - they really need to knock it back a bit. Even though the carbonation is a bit of a miss, this one's an easy drinker. The sweetness of the honey might annoy some, but I wasn't bothered by it at all. Again - my main gripe is the aggressive carbonation. It just doesn't really suit the style in my opinion.
Overall above average wheat ale with some real interesting flavors and characteristics that unfortunately get somewhat muted by the over carbonation.
