Notes / Commercial Description:
A perilously strong, rich amber English barley wine made with phenomenal amounts of Maris Otter malt and Target, Progress, First Gold and Challenger hops. 44 IBUs. Brewed in October 2011, this beer will mature for years but is already smooth, complex and fruity with a substantial hop and alcohol structure to allow for graceful ageing. Named after an ancient, giant (180’ tall) fertility symbol cut into the chalk downs of S.W. England – bearing neither the mug of beer nor the strategically placed Wandering Star…

On-tap at the Ginger Man in Manhattan, served in a snifter.

A: Clear reddish chestnut body with a finger of dense, creamy tan head. Strong retention and lacing. Great.

S: Candied dark fruits (lots of date, some fig), and substantial booze. Straightforward and pleasant, but far from exceptional.

T: An initial wave of gummy-worm sweetness quickly gives way to more traditional candied fruits, caramel, citrus, and bitter booze on the finish. A bit harsh, but pretty nice overall.

M: Creamy, frothy, and full-bodied without being sticky. Terrific.

O: Not a terribly memorable example of the style, but enjoyable nonetheless. Worth giving a taste if you're a fan of Barleywines.

On-tap 3/31/2012 at Track 84, in Warwick, RI served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a medium brown color, with a short dense off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains caramelized malts, some fruit and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel and fruit. Then a decent hops presence for the style comes in. The malt character is hearty and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and a little crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, strong kick, decent representation of style, it’s a decent beer overall but there are better choices within the style.

Served on tap at Mugs Alehouse in Brooklyn, NY

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden amber in color with a thin off-white head. The head reduces to a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slight amounts of caramel malt sweetness and a touch of alcohol presence.

T: This beer unfortunately has a slightly medicinal taste to it and there is a lot of alcohol present. The flavor starts with the caramel malt sweetness up front and then the alcohol takes over. The flavor is a little one-dimensional.

M: Slightly more than medium bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly sticky and there is a definite alcohol heat in the finish.

O: Alcohol presence and medicinal flavor does not make this an easy drinker or one that I want to go out and try again.

A: The beer is very hazy brownish amber in color. It poured with a thin ring of white bubbles around the edge of the glass that eventually completely faded away.
S: There are light aromas of alcohol and caramel malts in the nose. Some sweetness begins to become noticeable as the beer warms up.
T: The taste has flavors of alcohol, caramel and sweetness and also has some medicinal notes.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied and a bit sticky on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer really needs to warm up in order for you to begin to notice the flavors, although the alcohol taste also becomes stronger.
