GABF Weekend '08:

What a wonderful surprise to find out West. I am a big fan of the Rye Squared because of it's hoppy "C" hop flavor with the rich, spicy rye grains that ride ontop of barleywine syrupy maltiness. If anything the original is too sugary sweet, making it less palatable. The oak-aged variety gives extra depth to the caramel malt sweetness with a woodsy, nutty flavor that rounds out the residual sugars. The tannins in the oak compliment the rye, mellows out the sharpness of the hops and gives a much needed dryness to the otherwise overly sweet beer. Maybe this is the what the beer wanted to be all along. This continues to be a special beer for me.

A. Rich golden-copper, pretty darn clear, tiny head with good retention. Looks pretty much like the Rye Squared, let's be honest.

S. Mmm, spicy, oaky, a bit grainy... toasted caramel and booze... evident oak lends more complexity and character to an already decent brew... smooth and harmonious, sweet. I like it.

T. Quite sugary. Hint of molasses / raw sugar here, medium roasty malts, not *quite* chocolate flavored but there's some toffee going on. Hops are bold and citrusy. A little reminiscent of an American barleywine. Rye adds spice and sharpness, while the oak lends dryness and a fine woody flavor. The oak is actually pretty aggressive here and could be toned down a notch, but it's a bit late for that. Better than the normal Rye Squared in my mind. Finish is oaky and sweet.

M. Medium body, sweet. Not something I'd have glasses of, but this is a good beer and an improvement one I already liked. Recommended.

Sampled on tap at Tyler's in Apex, NC.

A - Amber in color with good clarity and a small off white head. Great lacing.

S - Fruity and floral hops. Malty as well. Very good.

T - This is a rich, complex beer with lots of hops and malt sweetness. It comes together nicely with a very well balanced punch.

M - Very thick and rich.

D - It's not my style but for such a strong beer, it's easy enough to drink. You'd better keep a careful count though.

Had this on-tap at the Brick Store Pub. Poured a beautiful orangey dark amber with a tightly beaded creamy head and good lacing. Smells of sweet malt, citrusy hops, and a light touch of oak. The taste is perhaps a touch overoaked, but not to the degree that it is not enjoyable or as much as some others carry it. Sweet oak with vanilla up front, followed by sweet malt, and citrusy hops. Smooth and quite easy to drink despite the abv.

Sixteen ounce pours into a pint glass from Barleys in Greenville. Consumed on 07/19/2008.

Finally got a chance to try this one and to be honest I could not be happier. I have not had a chance to make it down since this went on tap, but I was there for this and a few other choice goodies this past weekend. Poured a very nice, and very dark amber with a good haziness to it. Nice tow finger head of off-white foam quickly faded and was replaced by a broken crown that clung to the sides of the glass throughout the session. Decent, albeit nothing spectacular as far as side glass lace.

The aroma was not as heavy in the oak as I would have thought, but was still more then decent. Rich vanilla soaked notes came through quickly, followed by what was a more then decent dose of rye and hops. Some light oak in the aroma. More of it though in the flavor. This one came across very sweet, even from the onset, with a tangerine or orange like hop profile. Light notes of oak and vanilla riddled throughout gave it a dense, and very earthy profile with which to work with. Great dry finish made you go back for another taste almost immediately, leaving you with that thick, sweet, citric taste. Nice medium bodied, heavy at times Mouthfeel. Good carbonation, though it tended to fall towards the syrup side as it warmed. It was a big one for sure at close to 10%, however it was smooth sailing as far as putting this one down.

Overall I thought this was very good. Definitely a solid beer, and a wonderful addition to the terrapin lineup. It could use a little more time on the oak, to really bring out the flavors, but as it stands now this was a hell of a good beer.

On-tap at Tyler's new Apex location. Served in a pilsner glass a slightly darker brown than the regular Rye Squared, the beer was crisp with a thin diminishing head. Aroma was dominated by oak with rye and hops barely poking through in the background. The taste was just what I expected, everything I love about Rye Squared hidden behind a veil of oak flavor. The beer was somewhat on the heavy side, with the oak providing a bit of harshness. While this one was certainly worth trying, but this is one beer that I believe does not benefit from the addition of oak.

A: Served to me in a pint glass with a thin layer of frothy head. The beer is a dark amber color, relatively clear ... as far as I could tell in a dimly lit restaurant.

S: Tropical fruit and vanilla bean aromas are the most obvious. Background floral aromas also apparent.

T: The tropical fruit shows up again on the tongue, along with some mild oak. The bitterness is fairly subdued, letting the malt and oak shine through.

M: One of the most creamy beers I've had ... reminded me of a nitro-tap offering. Medium body with just a hint of an alcohol bite late.

D: This is a good sipper, the only beer I had with dinner. It's too complex and too high ABV for anything else. I'd certainly order another some other night, possibly AFTER dinner!

A: Pours a deep clear amber with a big fluffy off-white head that lingers throughout leaving very good lacing.

S: Smell is mostly sweet malts with vanilla and caramel. There are hints of oak in the smell but not a lot.

T: The taste is much like the smell but has a bit heavier oak presence, especially as the beer warms. I get a bit more of the rye in the taste as well.

M: Mouthfeel is medium to heavy and very creamy with a good bit of carbonation.

D: I really enjoyed this beer and it got better as it warmed. The oak really only complimented the taste and I actually like this a little better than the regular rye squared.

Clear amber orange with a thin head that quickly settles to a thin veil leaving one lone streamer of lace.

Aroma is a diabetic nightmare. Very sweet malt and maple with vanilla and orange marmalaid. Warm there's a charred oak note, coconut custard, and thye alcoholic kick of cherries jubilee.

Flavor is equally complex and overdone. A lot of sweet flavor and the hops are just tasting like honey drenched citrus peels. Nowhere as hoppy as the regular Rye2. Hot with alcohol and just too much going on with absolutely no finesse.

Body is big, sticky, dense, and lightly carbonated. Drinkability is limited to one pint.

Had this limited release on tap at Taco Mac.

A- Dark copper with read hues. Head is minimal. Brew is transparent.

S- Sweet and rich malt backing wiht a sour like hop presence. Alcohol is slightly warming the nose and chest while I inhale and the oak brings up the rear.

T- Very close to the nose with the richnesss and sweetness of the malts. Hops just don't step in and help out; they are too much in the rear. Molasses and brown sugar help describe the sweetness. The oak is present but not overwhelming. Nice touch to the beer. Alcohol is very present and noticable.

M- Medium to thick and carbonation is low.

D- Great experience trying this one but not very drinkable. It is all over the place and not well rounded. Definitely not sessionable.

Had it on draft at Charlie Mopps pub in Sandy Springs GA and i was a bit disappointed.

Poured Dark Broze with a haze

Aroma of hops, hops hops. Some sweet citus hints.

Taste as overpowering with a bitter start and finish with an abundant alcohol taste. caramel and citus are also present but the hop/alchol seemed to bury the oak flavor.

Finish was pure alcohol and hops (not to sound redundant) Not a extremely drinkable beer but one to enjoy once and move on. I hope they can improve on this style over time. Glad to see the attempt.

As I've already reviewed the 08 Rye^2, I'm going to talk about this in relation to that.

Rye^2 in any form is a favorite of mine. It's quite tempting to call this version the best, but I won't do that. What I will say is that oak aged Rye^2 is a different beast than 08 Rye^2. It reminds me of when I had the 07 Rye^2 back in March at the Terrapin brewery. The aging has done a lot for this beer.

This beer is much more mellow than the 08. Some hoppiness and its associated aromas and flavors are definitely still there, but they're very subdued compared to the normal 08. This beer is delicious, and an excellent balance. It's a nice change of pace to have a DIPA that isn't a complete hop bomb (don't get me wrong, I love hop bombs a lot, but I'm not always in the mood for them). The flavor is something you have to experience, but you will not be disappointed. I feel that the oak aging has actually done a lot for the beer, unlike some other wood aged beers.

Oak aged Rye^2 goes down so incredibly smoothly. Delicious. I could easily put away a few of these, and the alcohol seems even more well hidden. A true joy to drink.

I always recommend Terrapin beer to everyone. I'm a huge fan. This is really, really great though. Certainly a must-try if you can get your hands on it. I hope to have more soon!

I was lucky enough to get this at the Terrapin beer dinner at The Ravenous Pig in Orlando. It was the first keg released.

A: Poured into a small tasting glass. Oaked Rye Squared pours a gorgeous amber color that is mostly red than orange, with a decent head resting on top with a nice retention level, that leads to moderate lacing.

S: Some serious vanilla and cherry hints, followed by a huge hop aroma of citrus and some earthy tones. Some sweet malty hints are present as well which balance out this nose.

T: Holy crap! Unreal is an understatement. The malts are so perfect with their sweet caramel flavors, followed by the insane hoppy taste that brings in the citrus and pine. The major difference is the oak which brings in some serious coconut, vanilla and cherries.

M: mouthfeel is surprisingly moderate. medium body with a good carbonation level.

D: if you get the chance take advantage. so good.
