On tap in a pint glass at Hal & Al's on 7/23/11
Lighter color; golden apricot hues. Dense cloudiness. Poured an ample, one thumb head. Thin retention - skim of smooth foam. No lace.
Smells less than ideal. Prominent butter tones hug notes of decently-proportioned rye, grains, popcorn shells, husk and orange-zest hop-something. Faintly floral. Smells really off as it warms.
The first sip finds less butter than I was expecting. Regardless, the butter is present and unwanted; it mainly stays toward the front. The midsection is the only tolerable part - rye spice (without coming off as particularly bready) and dry, sharp orange peel (though it's nearly past-prime). The back half is the worst, wrought with cascading, crushed aspirin bitterness. It is unpleasant to say the least.
Medium-light body. Fizzy carbonation turmoil pushes that blasted bitterness all over the place. Finishes bitter and dry.
Drinkability is poor. This is just terrible. The bitterness is beyond manageable. I couldn't finish more than half the pint. What a shame that Neil House pawned this off on Hal & Al's.

On tap at Hal & Al's who claim to be the first ones to have this beer. They also were the first to have Indigo Imp...
Served in a Thirsty Dog pint.
Appearance
Slightly hazy orange. There was a fast disappearing head that actually left decent lacing.
Aroma
A lot of butter...uh oh. Rye adds it's tell tale spiciness to the mix. Some orange and pine are picked up from what can only be hops.
Taste
Upon my first sip I wished I had ordered something else. There is a LOT of butter here. Tons of buttery popcorn coats the palate until an unwanted bitterness stabs the back of the tongue on the finish. There's really only butter and bitter. Some faint orange and pine try to peek out but their efforts aren't enough to salvage this pint.
Mouthfeel
The beer feels ok, but there is a little bit of slick butteriness. It finish dry with an active level of carbonation.
Overall
Quite a mistake. The beer is dominated by an awful butteriness. I had a hard time drinking this. I only kept it up with aspirations for my next beer. When will Hal & Al's be the first in Columbus to get something good?
