Nitro pint at Hal & Al's on 10/14/11
Note: This was brewed specifically for Hal & Al's. The establishment gets some limited brews or one-offs from time to time. Too bad they aren't often good.
Medium dark brown that settles somewhat darker with ruby highlights. Whoa... so, even though this is nitro, it sets up with a three finger head. WTF, mate? Retention is good; takes a long time to drop. Mostly solid lace aside from some holes.
Stop to smell the head recede. Aromas of dirty bourbon, semi-sweet, tangy dark fruits, burnt raisins, very faint oak and some earth. Subtle overtones of cocoa and chocolate. Again, dirty. But it actually smells of bourbon. Something akin to potpourri. Maybe some brown sugar and/or molasses.
Tastes much more one dimensional. Random non-fussy roasted malts turn to bitter a dry, bitter coffee finish. Tastes kind of earthy and dirty, too; works ok with the dryness of the beer. A bit tangy in the middle. Low amount of hops.
The feel is strange - easily on the thinner side for the style; then again, it's ok for 5% abv, I guess. It's kind of smooth but still subject to nippy carbonation. Dry grittiness? Cool. Coating finish? Not cool. It locks the tongue to the roof of the mouth. Ugh.
As far as Neil House goes this isn't bad. And I'll give them credit for the low abv. Regardless, this beer seems on the cusp of off flavors and, as such, is poised to follow trend.
