Pours a mahogany colour, very pale for a porter. Head is foamy, cream-coloured and not bad.
Smells grainy, and sweet. Chestnut character mixing with sweet caramel malt notes, with a hint of coffee and licorice at the back. Fairly sweet overall, but pleasant enough.
Taste is also very sweet, more so in fact. Malty grains upfront develops some vanilla and whipped butter on the mid-palate, then finish has a faint whisper of coffee notes but not a lot. Definitely needs more roast; not only is it just lacking stylistically but the sweetness of the front could be forgiven if there were more bitterness to balance the finish.
Body is OK, bit of carbonation. Not bad.
A little weak, and not portery enough. Too sweet, as well, for me at any rate.
