Depth Charge 2022 (Oak Aged Imperial Red Rum Ale) , Red Ale - Imperial / Double , 10.3% ABV , 40 IBU
As it was with the warships of old, conventional means would only skim the surface. Something of more substance and intent would be necessary to combat the lurking, giant beasts below. In this year’s Depth Charge, you will find strong caramel notes alongside dark fruit, vanilla, and biscuit flavours. All met with the sailor’s staples of oak and rum. This limited seasonal release will warm your spirits and sink ships -- all at the same time.

Clear but so dark it is close to opaque; deep red-brown color. Poured a short head that collapsed back to a skiff in half a minute. Too dark to see the carbonation level. Left large strings of lace with dots below.
Very strong, very dark roasted malt smell. Sweet raisin or prune smell that also seems to be roasted. The combination is a bit like a small fire in a chemical plant. Something is a bit sour, also a bit of a chemical plant smell. Light yeast and alcohol smell. Swirling the glass kicks up a light barnyard and then really boosts the raisin/prune smell.
Flavor is dominated by the dark roasted malt. This is just past the point where it starts to taste burned. The dried fruit flavors are also quite strong and tend towards scorched. Seems a bit bitter from the scorch. Light alcohol flavor. Strange sour flavor that really seems out of place for any style of beer. The aftertaste is mostly scorched malt. This fades down to a mild bitter that seems more scorch related than any hops.
No tongue tingling, but this does turn into a nice foam. A bit too coarse to be creamy. There is a bit of a burn after a while; this could be either from the high ABV or a side effect of scorching the malt.
This is close in smell and flavor to a really dark Belgian beer I had years ago that I really didn't like. There is not a lot to recommend here. Too much heat for too long at the start of the process tainted the ingredients with char and scorch flavors that overwhelm whatever other scents and flavors might have been available to discover. The weird sour flavor was like a wet burp bringing up gastric juices. Not bad enough to pour down the drain, but it will not be purchased a second time.
