650ml bottle. Simple dark chocolate bean and leaf imagery depicted on the label.

This beer pours a very dark red cola-tinted brown hue, with three fingers of puffy, foamy, and ebulliently bubbly beige head, which leaves a broad swath of sinking storm front lace around a portion of the glass as things duly recede.

It smells of gritty dry cocoa powder, nutty roasted caramel malt, toasted biscuits, a bit of dry vanilla, subtle black fruit, wet ash, and leafy, earthy hops. The taste is more well blended oily nuts and bittersweet chocolate, grainy caramel malt, a hint of sour milk, an understated pome fruitiness, and simple earthy, weedy hops.

The carbonation is light and playfully frothy, the body medium-light in weight, and generally smooth, a lilting creaminess knocking at the proverbial front door. It finishes off-dry, the chocolate retreating into a weakly bitter pose, while the nuts laze about (heh), and the surly, ineffectual hops continue to display their tepid wares.

A sort of hopped-up London Porter (ill-advised after the fact, that), with the base beer still stoutly (sorry) hanging on, the cocoa and sour milk essence hard to eschew. That said, this offering maintains an agreeable balance, with just enough generic edge to push things forward.

Appearance. Pours dark brown with a little red-orange amd a finger+ of light tan head that doesn't last long.

Smell. Dark chocolate. Surprise, surprise! Smells sweet, like dark chocolate fudge. There's a little roasty dark malt, maybe a little bit of vanilla and molasses, but mostly just the sweet dark chocolate.

Taste. Chocolate and roasted grains, slightly acidic and metalic tasting. A little sweet, which is fine. Not really what I was expecting from the smell.

Mouthfeel. Medium body, medium carbonation.

Overall. Man this beer smelled great. Tasted good.

Not really one of their special releases but rather a sessionable porter that has the added chocolate flavours to make it more of a dessert beer. Pretty balanced and very drinkable this is worthy addition to their increasingly improving lineup. Would be cool to see this in cans like Keepers Stout.

A: Brown-black with a ruby hue, pours with a nice, light-tan head but there's only a very thin ring of retention and no lace.

S: Pumpernickel rye bread with hints of fruity esters (pear & blackberry).

T: Light dusting of cocoa but not overly chocolatey. Nice roasted nut, hints of pear and blackberry, slight woodsy spicing, modest bitterness, could use a bit more residual sweetness to bring out the chocolatey flavour.

M: Moderate body is a bit chalky.

D/O: Easy drinking, but not overly enticing.
