12/29/24 - (Can - Home) (Chicago, IL) Can Notes: Purchased a single can on November 27, 2024 at Beer on the Wall Park for $2.27 including tax.. Sold at store temperature, refrigerated upon returning home before opening this morning. 14.9 oz,, best before March 2025, canning date possibly March 8, 2024 based on can code L406882610 10 A 22:45. 4.0% ABV, Imported Stout Draught Style. Brewed with only the top ingredients.
Murphy's stout has been brewed to the same unique recipe since 1856. We pride ourselves in only using the top ingredients of pale malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley and hops. Murphy's offers you that uniquely smooth, creamy and wonderfully palatable full bodied stout flavour with roasted chocolate and coffee undertones and a 'biscuity sweet' malt aroma.
The Ingenious Floating Draughtflow system enables you to enjoy the creamy head of Murphy's from a can. Unchilled cans may overflow. Serving size 12 oz, servings per container 1.25, calories 124, Carbohydrates 10g; Fat 0g; Protein 2g. Pasteurized beer, brewed and canned by Heineken UK Limited, 3-4 Broadway Park, Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Product of the UK, imported by Heineken USA, White Plains, NY.
Appearance: Poured a proper near US pint via a 45 degree pour of the can, yielding a generous one inch creamy off white plus light tan creamy head that linger until drinking a good portion. over the dark chestnut to near black base. Razor thin lacing left in its wake. Looks very good. 4.25
Aroma: Mild chocolate aroma leads, roasted malt and barley follows. Mild to medium in strength, medium in enjoyment. 3.75
Taste: Sweet chocolate over a mild roast coffee with sugar. Sweet ice chocolate coffee is what I'm gathering, too much sweetness for me and I believe for a proper presentation of the style. 3.0
Mouthfeel: Light and watery body, drinks light and easy in terms of alcohol and depth. Dry, roasted malt and whatever hops used fight but lose to the sweetness. Nitro can pour, sweet sugar coffee and milk chocolate finish. 3.25
Overall: This is just too sweet for a repeat purchase on my end. OK, but think I'll stick with Guinness. 3.25

The pour is matte black with a tan & frothy head of foam. The taste is roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, caramel, raisin, black licorice, & pipe tobacco. Cheers! B

Classic creamy mouthfeel with aromas of chocolate and roasted malt. Slightly more bitterness than Guinness. A lovely pint.

Good light stout. Love the nitro mouth-feel. Most obvious comparison is Guinness and I'd say it taste very similar except lacking that slightly sour tinge at the back end. Not a lot on the smell end, just a bit of dark maltiness. Flavor is coffee, toast, a little bit of dark chocolate and dark roasted malt.

Murphy’s Irish Stout
Murphy Brewery Ireland Limited
Look (4.75):
A careful pour produces an impressively dense, creamy head courtesy of the nitrogen widget. The body is jet black, pushing SRM well beyond 45, with excellent head retention and a classic stout presentation.
Smell (4.0):
Roasted barley leads the aroma—nutty and smooth rather than sharp. Medium-roast coffee follows, notably not burnt or acrid like some dry stouts. Subtle mineral notes from the water and nitrogen round things out, with gentle chocolate undertones and a soft, restrained yeast presence.
Taste (4.25):
The flavor opens with mellow roasted malt and chocolate, followed by a distinct nuttiness reminiscent of unblanched almonds. There’s a pleasing roundness without sweetness. A mild smokiness emerges late, paired with a touch of hop bitterness that slowly builds but never dominates. The yeast remains soft and well-hidden, letting the malt do the work.
Mouthfeel (4.75):
Exceptionally smooth and calming. The nitrogen creates a creamy, almost sedating texture that settles on the lower jaw and lingers. The beer seems content to rest on the palate, coating the tongue without heaviness or bite.
Overall (4.5):
A beautifully balanced Irish stout that emphasizes smoothness, restraint, and drinkability. Not aggressive or flashy, but quietly confident. Nutty, roasted, creamy, and subtly complex, Murphy’s delivers a relaxing, contemplative stout experience that rewards patience and careful sipping. A classic done right.

Canned in a big old tallboy crafty craft can and part of my secret Santa present from the Office
Pours, with a pop so I should imagine there is some kind of widget, to reveal a slow to settle jet black body with huge tan head
Aroma is creamy latte
Flavour is over creamed coffee

This was a present from the wife, purchased at Plonk in Canberra in November 2025 and drunk a month or so later.
L: Thick, jet black, with a thick, creamy, milk-coffee-white head. There was the usual downward-cascading nitro pour effect, which looked lovely while it lasted. This is an excellent-looking nitro stout.
S: The smell is quite neutral. I struggled to identify anything other than perhaps a mild creaminess. The thick collar of nitro stout head might be doing its best to lock the aroma into the beer...
T: The taste is also mild. There's a creamy body, a bit of watery thinness, and then the slightest kick of roastiness and a little fruitiness and tea leaves on the swallow and retronasally. Bitterness is relatively nonexistent, rearing its head somewhat sheepishly long after the swallow. This beer is clearly made for quick drinking, with neither flavour, aroma, nor carbonation getting in the way of a long, smooth pull.
M: Conforms almost to the letter to the expected nitro stout mouthfeel. It's creamy, silky and luxurious, with virtually no carbonation and no carbonic kick on the swallow. The slight thinness of the taste profile gives the perception of thinness of the body on the swallow, but it's not distracting to the point you'll forget the pillow-soft mouthfeel earlier in the sip.
O: I would have preferred more roastiness and heft in the flavour profile, but as noted above, if this beer is designed for quick consumption, likely in bulk, then it's ticking the right boxes.
Cheers!

(review from February 2017) Less "bready" in taste then a Guinni, nice thirst-quencher with good mouthfeel, a sweeter, less dryish aftertaste and very quaffable.

Dark with some read showing through and a creamy tan head. Some light chocolate on the nose and it does remove the bitterness; the taste comes with some chocolate and a touch of hops. Pleasant but not very intense flavor. The feel is light and smooth, a bit watery.

Surprised I never reviewed this...ok let's go! I am a pretty big fan of Guinness and will nearly always order it in a pub, and for some reason it makes me feel happier than other beer, maybe it is the nitrogen or something. Not sure ; )
From a nitro can...looks totally amazing. Better initially than a nitro canned Guinness. Wow. As it turns black it makes beautiful waves and shapes. Not quite as deep black and beautiful as Guinness however, a little more red.
Quite a strong coffee aroma, and I am not a huge fan of coffee.
Taste really is not like Guinness at all. This is not at all as smooth, and has far more coffee and chocolate flavour. This also has stronger hoppiness. Initially I don't like it, but maybe it will grow on me as I continue to drink. This really is nothing like Guinness at all. Guinness is one of my favourite commercial beers for sure.
In terms of mouth feel, it somehow lacks the creaminess and smoothness of Guinness draught. Sure it has more coffee flavour and dry hops, but Guinness somehow has a sweeter, smoother, subtle, more magical complex flavour. And I'm not a fan of the taste of coffee ; )
The thing I like most about this is the interesting dry hop bitterness in the aftertaste. It's really growing on me, the more I drink it. But for me the coffee taste is too strong and nothing compares with the smoothness, nitrogen surge and subtelety of Guinness draught. Still, I like this more than almost all European dark beers except Belgiain ones.
