330ml bottle bought from Tebay Farm shop... Described on the bottle as a Star Anise Infused Quadrupel...
Poured a deep mahogany red colour with some yeasty haziness. Creamy head poured loose and frothy and faded almost instantly to wispy covering... no real lacing to speak about...
Lots going on in the aroma... lots of rich malty notes mixed with sweet nuttiness - hints of almond and pistachio, toffee and treacle, very woody, musty, some overripe (rotten ?) fruits - apples and bananas, grainy malts, anise, lots of booze, toasted (burnt) raisin bread, light smokiness, some chocolate, butterscotch...
Taste - Very strong boozy notes mixed with Belgian yeastiness, bready, very woody, musty, toasted nuts, vanilla, very light toffee sweetness, sweet overripe fruits, some vegetal traces, anise - hint of cough medicine, burnt butter...
M&D - Fairly sharp and dry... medium bodied... A touch too boozy to be very drinkable...
Overall - A pretty good brew although maybe a little rough around the edges... not something i'd want a lot of but worth trying... definitely a sipper..
