BBE march 2016, 8.0% ABV, 330ml from Ales by Mail
Appearance (Look) = 6%
clear, not much head, fizzy, dark yellow brown
Smell = 24%
malt, banana esters, fruit?
Taste = 40%
malt, cascade, yeast. the hops brings down the sweet. slight astringency
Mouthfeel (Feel) = 10%
heavy, chewy
Overall = 20%
I liked this. I could taste the components. It is described as a belgian IPA and the bottle talks about darker grain citrus hops and juicy berry notes (above other things). These aspects I couldn't really taste and not sure if I'd call it a belgian IPA. To me it tastes more like an American barley wine. but either way, I liked it.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of April 2014. Picked up a while back from Trembling Madness in York, and stored in a fridge. A Belgian-style double IPA - these guys are certainly creative.
Poured into a Delirum chalice. Bottle conditioned. A deep, hazy marmalade hue with visible sediment and medium carbonation. Yields a decent head of creamy off-white foam that hangs around for a few minutes before reducing to a patchy surface layer. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, fruity yeast esters and mild aromatic hops. A complex mélange with hints of citrus, pineapple, faint tropical fruit, brown sugar, sherry, phenolics and a warming whiff of booze.
Tastes of caramel malt with a fruity yeast character and a dry, slightly hoppy finish. Notes of yeast esters, banana, mild spice, sugar, faint pineapple/citrus and stewed hops. Slightly sour, and possibly oxidised. A solventy hint of alcohol in the background and a subtle bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and slightly spicy, with decent body. Pretty astringent, with an aftertaste of yeast esters and herbal hop notes.
Hmmmm - not brilliant. In fact, I would venture to call it a shambolic mess with identity issues. Sort of a strong Belgian ale mixed with an IPA; it tries to please all and succeeds in pleasing none. The yeast notes dominate the aroma/flavour, with hints of fruitiness and sourness. The aromatic hops are weak and lack presence, while the malt is rather sweet and under-attenuated. In summary, it's a bit of a disaster. Try it yourself, though I can't recommend it.

Half pint gravity pour at The Rake in London during the Great Cumbrian Beer Festival. From notes.
A - Poured a dark copper with a ring of white head, leaving not much lacing and a little bit of retention. Bright.
S - Some spicy hops are there combined with a good malt backbone. Good balance between the two. Good fruity yeast esters work their way into the mix to make this quite a nice smelling beer.
T - I wrote down that it seemed like a hopped dopplebock since I didn't know what style it was aimed at. Fruity from both the malt, yeasty, and hops, working well all together. Plum, grape, and pineapple all come out quite nicely. Good but obviously not to style.
M - Mild carbonation with a medium body. Sweet finish. Expected more of a hop bite.
O/D - Lovely beer IMO. I liked it alot. Not sure what style they were aiming for when I was drinking it but I enjoyed it a fair bit. Could use some tweaking but otherwise a good one.
