A 500ml bottle with a BB of May 2014. Purchased recently from Trembling Madness in York. The label describes it as a collaboration between Hardknott and John Keeling (of Fullers). The result is an IPA that is hopped with four new English hop varieties: Baron, Landlady, Archer and Bishop.
Poured into a Duvel tulip. A rich, faintly hazy orange-amber hue with strong carbonation. Produces a vast head of creamy white foam that lasts for ages; it eventually subsides to a thick surface layer. Aroma of grassy, citrus hop notes, underpinned by dry yeast esters and sweet malt.
Tastes of grainy malt with a yeasty, aromatic hop character and a dry, bitter finish. Slightly sweet. Notes of grassy aromatic hops, a hint of citrus and considerable earthy yeast. A dry, restrained bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and full-bodied, with a subtle spicy quality. Rather astringent. Aftertaste of earthy yeast and faint hop notes.
Pretty good - a modern English IPA that follows in the footsteps of it's predecessors. The hop varieties, while new, contribute relatively traditional aroma characteristics. Quite a strong yeast component to the aroma/flavour - probably too much. A solid effort; worth sampling if you have the chance.
