Served from 500ml bottle at cellar temperature into straight pint glass.

A) Opaque red-tinged black. Off-white head; thin but persistent. Looks the part.

S) Not very roasty / nutty / malty. Hints of something acidic in there. Not promising.

T) A lot better than the smell. Roast malt flavour, if a bit thin. Little bitterness. The basic components of a good stout are lacking. Very little aftertaste; a good stout should have a lingering burnt / bitter flavour in my opinion.

M) Body is ok, but it is too fizzy, the downfall of many sub-par stouts.

O) A below average stout.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Nov 2011, so it's a little out of date. Described on the label as a traditional Yorkshire stout, the titular Jem is the brewery's springer spaniel.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A very dark ruby-brown; appears black unless held to the light. Produces a large head of frothy light-brown foam that subsides after a minute or so. Lees in the bottle suggest conditioning with live yeast. Aroma of roasted malt with notes of burnt grain, coffee, molasses, dried fruit, stewed hops and a metallic twang.

Tastes of roasted malt with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of burnt grain, coffee, earthy yeast and stewed hops. Has a nutty character with a restrained bitterness. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, but feels a little thin for the style. Leaves the palate dry. Aftertaste of bitter roasted malt.

Not bad - a nice stout with a solid, roasty character. A good blend of flavours with a satisfying bitterness. Quite dry. The only weakness is the slightly watery body. Eminently drinkable.
