A 500ml bottle with a BB of Nov 2013. Picked up recently from the York Wine & Beer shop. Described on the label as a ruby coloured winter warmer with chocolate and roasty flavours.
Poured into a tulip pint glass. A clear coppery-reddish hue with medium carbonation. Forms a large head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding. Aroma of roasted malt with hints of caramel, chocolate, mild dried fruit, faint brown sugar and stewed hops. Slightly sweet.
Tastes of roasted malt with a bitter finish. Notes of roasted grain, caramel, chocolate, brown sugar, faint spice and stewed hops. A distinct bitterness upon swallowing - probably from both hops and malt. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with nice carbonation and decent body. Somewhat astringent, with an aftertaste of roasted malt, bitter hops and a subtle fruitiness.
Rather nice, and improves as it warms. A pleasing roasty, chocolatey character with good depth and a surprising bitter finish. Tastes darker than it looks. Does what it says on the tin - warms your cockles in winter. Worth sampling if you come across it.
