$ 20.98 (Including shipping)/750 mL bottle ($ 0.826) from Tavour, Seattle, WA. Reviewed 2/4/19.
Undated bottle. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 54 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 3.75.
Body – Light amber, muddy. When held to the light, appears translucent.
Head – Small (Maximum 1.8 cm, aggressive center pour), off white, high density, initially fizzy but settles down, shorter than average retention time, diminishing to a zero to two mm ring and no layer.
Lacing – None. As expected for a 13.4% ABV brew.
First pour – Light amber, hazy.
Aroma – 4 - Toffee
Flavor – 4.5 - Begins moderately sweet with a distinct toffee flavor. It ends with a touch of hop bitterness, just enough to cut the sweetness. Surprisingly, no alcohol (13.4% ABV) flavor. No diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, watery, soft carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 4.25 – Very good flavor and very good drinkability. The alcohol is exceedingly well hidden – even after consumption, gastric warming is only vague. The toffee is predominate to the point of being the only flavor.

i like this a lot, maybe more a belgian strong than an english barleywine, but its splitting hairs at this level i guess. this is quite apart from the delicate saisons and wild types that have put funkwerks on the map, but the quality is equally compelling. deep toffee colored brew with quite a bit of sediment towards the bottom of the bottle, an airy head rests on top, lots of viscosity too. aroma of concentrated grain sweetness, butterscotch and toffee and caramel all at once, like it belongs on ice cream. strong vanilla from the barrels too, more oak than whiskey to me, but both are present, and a curious fruitiness of dried apples, golden raisins, and dates. sweet all the way. the flavor has more depth and balance i think than the nose, but is also so absurdly alcoholic that a lot of that is broken down before it can fully express itself, and ends up somewhat less attractive to me than the aroma as a result. more concentrated malts, but not as dark as it smells like they should be, somewhat lighter, which marries well with the yeast esters here, not fully belgian to me, but definitely beyond the typical english types, maybe a mix of strains to get it to this level. highly pervasive sugar, brown sugar specifically, wet new oak, and absurd booziness, fusel and harsh all the way though the finish. i like the flavors here a lot, but it would be just as effective in the 10% abv range i reckon. definitely a bit of a different stride here for funkwerks, but a cool beer, especially in the depths of winter. probably worth ageing to mellow too...

This super-duper barrel-aged beer delivers bold fruity flavors with deep caramel notes and warming attributes. We aged this beer in a variety of oak bourbon barrels where the alcohol by volume slowly leveled up. Bright carbonation tickles your palate and leaves you with a crisp sherry-like finish. Notes of candy apple, warm sugar, and light spice.
