2004 gold medal winner World Beer Cup, 2005 bronze medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival. A dark German lager with low malt sweetness and hop flavor. A very easy drinking dark beer.

Reviewed at Hereford & Hops Brewpub, this selection pours near black with some thicker ruby highlights. The tan head holds relatively well and leaves some solid rings of lace.

Light roasted malt with some molasses in the nose. Sweet and a bit candy-like with a somewhat limp malt backbone. A hint of coffee and earthy malted milk. Mellow but nice and consistent with the style.

The flavor is again mellow but good with some roasted malt, molasses, caramel, and toffee. Some light yeastiness and leafy hops are detectable as well. A hint of tangy fruit is evident in the finish. Just a hint of espresso is floating around as well. Dim but solid, very similar to other brews from H&H. Timid but quality.

Medium bodied with low/moderate carbonation. Airy and fluffy in texture with some crispness initially. A semidry finish with some lingering texture. Well balanced and clean.

This beer was served in a pub glass. It was black, coffee like with a tan colored head.It had a roasty, sweet malt, slight smoke aroma very aromamatic. The taste was nutty, chocolaty, caramally with a burnt roasty taste, very complex. It had a medium body, slightly chewy with a clean dry finish.A very tastey and highly drinkable beer.Recommended.

Once again to remark on a brewpub a year round "black lager" flowing is a must stop in my book. Appears a dark brown cola hue with a nice light tan head dwindles at a good pace leaves behind even lacing. Aroma contains sweet chocolate, touch of coffee notes, herbal hops and even some toasted nut qualities. Flavor chocolate and herbal mix blend very nicely bringing about a smooth nut bready character even bitterness dead on to style I always love me a well done Schwarz here's one for sure. Mouthfee is medium to light body range even smooth carbonation is silky smooth going down on the palate. Drinkability another go to from this fine establishment seek out some Hereford and Hops if traveling on I-79 around the burgh.

Substantial roasty and malty aroma. Touch of lace, not completely black. Very fresh and creamy medioum mouthfeel. Some chocolate and a hin of coffee. A very nice beverage and good for its style.Nicely carbonated and I could stay with this all night. Recommended.

First Review! I enjoyed this Gold Medal (World Beer Cup) winning beer on tap in a chilled 12 oz. glass at Hereford & Hops Restaurant & Brewpub in Cranberry. The appearance was very dark and the head was about a half an inch and quickly dissipating. The smell was dark and had a slight roasted aroma to it. It smelled very similar to the way it tasted. The taste was dark and full bodied, yet still maintained its characteristics of a lager. This beer was not overpowering as far as the bitterness of its hops and taste of the malt, yet still was full of flavor. The mouthfeel was average and wasn't overly carbonated which helped it to bring out more of its body. The drinkability was good and is a nice beer to enjoy with your meal. For a dark lager it was very enjoyable and is worth a try.
