I spoke with the brewer about the style of this beer while given a tour of the brewing facilities. This style was on the low end of the spectrum of dunkel that is brewed in the Kulmbach region where he said the Schwarzbier is the next step up in German lagers from the dunkel. Appears an amber caramel hue light tan head that sticks around for a little as it dwindles it leaves fine lacing around my glass. Aroma is full of toasted grains a nice malty sweetness with a light herbal malt profile to complement it. Flavor has a nutty edge from the toasted malted barley mild even hop bitterness with more of the herbal hop flavor coming through. Mouthfeel is light to medium body range with very smooth even carbonation. Drinkability is very nice overall some, a decent amount of flavor with a refreshing quality about it.

Brown-mahogoney colour. Thin head. Some dark malts, caramel, but on the weaker part of their lineup and too sweet. Dry finish. No aroma, thinnish, and above average carbonation. Sampled at the Pittsburgh brewpub with the owner.Fresh, but nowhere near many others of this style I have enjoyed.
