Super mellow place located right on the ocean in Kona. It's a little off the the touristy downtown but still close enough to walk to. Advertised as having the most extensive beer menu in Hawaii, there are 30 - 35 beers on tap. A third are local, a third are from the American West coast, the rest are from elsewhere. The selection featured plenty of good offerings but it definitely tilts toward pale ales. Only seven were darker and four were Belgian style. No saisons.

The porch is a great place to hang out with several long elevated picnic tables and benches. Across the street are the breaking waves of the Pacific. Pretty cool location for a beer bar. There were plenty of beers I hadn't had, which isn't easy.

Service was low key but attentive.

A solid choice at the south end of Alii Drive, visited for a late lunch after exploring Kona. Nice selection of locally brewed beer , including Mehana and Hawai’i Nui from Hilo, Big Island Brewhaus from Waimea, and the local Kona Brewery. Other solid choices primarily from the West Coast, and a few imports as well. Knowledgeable servers, with good suggestions and samples. Great fresh fish, both grilled and battered/fried, and good overall food selections. The views of the bay from the upper deck restaurant are an added bonus.

A very cool place right on the main drag of Ali'i Drive in Kailua-Kona. Two levels offer the choice of watching the beautiful scenery and sunsets from high or low.

The food was less than decent and the service was lacking but that didn't keep us from coming back. The selection of great brews (featuring a ton of local offerings) and dedication to craft beer was a winner for us. Even the menu allotted space to advertise American Craft Beer Week. What a great gesture in a tourist driven town.

In addition to selections from Kona Brewing, Maui Brewing, etc. they had a very wide selection of everything from Rogue Chipotle Ale to Deschutes Chainbreaker White IPA (so good!)

I would absolutley hit up Humpy's again when I go back to Kona.

A - Tough to beat the view here. The building is about 40 feet from the ocean and booth floors have spectacular views of the surf, especially at sunset. The interior is a tropical take on a sports bar, but tactful, with a layout that focuses on the water.

Q - Beer quality was great. Had an IPA, a labmic, a brown, and a nitro stout and all of them were in top shape.

Sr - Service was good. In general the servers had a good working knowledge of the beers and had good recommendations. When I asked which IPA was the freshest on tap, the server thought for a moment before listing two kegs that had come in within the past 2 days.

Sl - A killer selection of local micros, including harder to find limited releases, cover about 50% of the taps. About 30% are a mix of big and small name west coast micros, and the rest are European micro standards.

F - I thought the food was just ok. They serve breakfast lunch and dinner, with a decent amount of variety. The problem is that Kona is loaded with killer food joints, so you never have to settle for "just ok".

Humpy's is a must stop for BA's in Kona. Highlights are clearly the fact that they have the most impressive draft selection on the island, and the entire place (both floors) looks out onto the water there on Alii street.

As a tourist I stuck with all of the Hawaiian beers I can't get at home, and they had them nicely represented for most (nearly all?) styles of beer. I appreciated the LOCAL designation on the menu to make ordering faster. I'm sure locals appreciate the many mainland imports, because honestly if I lived here I'd probably be tired of local beers and crave a Sierra Nevada or other.

Food covered a wide range of items. My mother in law enjoyed her fish entree. Veggie burger was tasty, and they made it Hawaiian style with the glaze and grilled pineapple rings. Fries were good. Big nachos order was a little disappointing, seemed like they were bagged chips and not homemade, and all the beans were at the very bottom (when you basically run out of chips). Children's grilled cheese was quite good, since I wound up eating almost all of it due to my daughter's lack of appetite.

Servers were polite and prompt, which was actually the exception to the norm on my visit to Hawaii this time. I didn't inquire about the beers so I don't know their knowledge there, but I appreciated the smile, fast service, and checking on us for refills and such.

I admit to liking the character of the Anchorage location better but this is nonetheless a great place for BA's to hit in Kona.

Stopped in for lunch and got to meet BA birddogg66, who happens to be the bar manager there.

Given the touristy nature of Kailua-Kona, I wouldn't have expected a good beer bar in town, yet here it is, right across the street from the bay. Typical of the restaurants/bars I visited, there's a sizeable outdoor seating area that seamlessy (and windowlessly) to the bar area inside. The indoors has a vaguely sports barish vibe. The noise of the waves and the constant ocean breezes may not be the optimum atmosphere for quiet contemplation of your pint, but it's the ocean and breeze. In Hawaii. So yeah, not a lot to complain about there!

Good selection of brews from the mainland, but Hawaii is well represented, too. The beer menu helpfully is broken down by beer style, with a brief description for each individual beers. Hawaiian beers are called out on the menu. An unexpectedly nice variety of styles and breweries. Beers are served in nonic pint glasses. I ended up going with a surprisingly tasty Kona Big Wave, then a Maui Big Swell IPA that was so good it inspired me to make a beer run for a couple of sixers later that afternoon. I noticed Deschutes Hop Trip and Bigfoot as seasonals.

Service was another pleasant surprise. When your bar manager is a BA, you've obviously got someone to talk beer with, but our server proved to be quite knowledgeable as well. She seemed quite happy to talk about the beer menu, make suggestions and discuss the relative merits of the Hawaiian offerings.

Our food was pretty tasty, but a word of warning that the portions are of the gut-busting variety. I had a (half-pound) burger cooked perfectly to order with onion rings. The wife had a "Steak Bomb" sandwich, a monstrous creation with pizza/calzone dough wrapped around steak/peppers/onions/a load of cheese. Everything was hot and tasted fresh. Prices would be high on the mainland, but are very much inline with what I saw elsewhere on my trip.

Definitely a spot worth checking out.
