Serving: 341mL bottle into a tulip glass.

Pours a muted brown into a deep copper welling. A hazelnut-tinged, one-finger head that disapates rather quickly.

Drawing it up to my mouth, I detect tones of different roasted tree nuts, deeply roasted malts, baked pumpernickel bread and faintest scents of alcohol.

Very similar in composition to the nose, there is the slightest fleeting taste of hazelnut, fresh yeasty bread, and a bitter but not overpowering dark roast coffee-toned finish. The alcohol seems separate but not uncomplimentary.

The mouthfeel is dry, but the bitter notes attack the back of your mouth and leave it watering.

This is quite the session-able beer, but best at its freshest. The joy in this beer comes from it knowing well enough to not try to be more than it is; it's traditional and it's a decent (not exemplary) representation of its style.

I'd have to say that I much prefer it on tap versus bottles, but still a decent brew nonetheless.

Pretty unimpressive looking, really, a dark ruddy copper with a thin ring of head and only slight traces of lacing.

The nose is mildly roasty with hints of caramel, doughy bread and earthy hops.

It's very dry and roasty with a floral bitter finish, nutty, kind of lacking a really strong malt presence.

Light bodied, thin, not too impressive.

Overall the best I can say about this beer is that it's not bad. But then I doubt any beer truly worth drinking has ever been described using litotes.

The harvest edition with fresh, wet, Hallertau hops. Great to see the community getting together and brewers connecting with local farmers.

A: Chestnut brown, thin ring of head, no retention or lacing.

S: Nice floral & spicy aroma with underly bread & caramel.

T: Some grainy astringency that makes me wonder if it's already going downhill. Nice floral & spicing hopping, caramel, nut, balanced bitterness.

M: Light to moderate body just isn't malty enough for the style.

D: Below average for the style.

Thanks Ralphus!

Stubbie bottle sample- Pours deep chestnut/dark brown witha two finger frothy cap. Aromas are basically all about the malts, some vanilla, toasty and mild cookie. Very subdued malt character, with dry, toasty malts, and some dark bready flavours. Pretty thin and boring as a result of the lack of flavour.

I generally like the products of Heritage Brewery. I also like that they are a local Brewery located in the town my dad grew up in. My wife who really loves their porter met the owner of the Brewery when the owner brought her dog in to the vet clinic where she works. No free beer yet but we were invited to drop by the brewery. We tried that but it's only open during the work week!

The beer is deep brown and leans towards warm red tones. it has a thin head that is a tawny colour. Smells malty and sweet. it tastes great until the after taste which is very sour. Going down it briefly tasted like a coffee cake or some such desert. Still its not bad. very smooth. I'd like it better if it were not see sweet.

Pours a dark, translucent cola ruby-brown. The head is substantial, and it remains with good lacing throughout.

The aroma is celery and lemon, with musty notes and a touch of sulphur.

The mouthfeel is a bit watery with medium carbonation.

The taste is where I'm slightly confused: I'm hit with an overwhelming sour, acidic lemon tang, like a cider almost, followed by roasted malt and copper penny bitterness. As a whole, it's like finally (finally?) experiencing a beer brewed with sour tart candies. Quite unusual.

While the beer is not necessarily bad, this is not a beer for me. Far too cidery and not malty enough.

Poured from a retro stubby bottle. The head is rather small and lacking in the retention department. Some lacing. Has a reddish bronze colour.

The smell is rather fruity (raisin) with some sweet notes in there.

Tastes of fruits, malt and light hop bitterness. A decent brew but there are better. This is my favorite offering from this brewery.

A - Medium copper with a weak head.

S - A little bit o malt in the nose, with some apple/pear. Some roastiness and stale tobacco is faintly present as well.

T - Mild, in all respects.Kind of a dry, crispness with a slightly tart touch. Again some roastiness, and a grainy husk.

M - Light, not overly fizzy.

D - I supposed it's all right. Nothing special, and kinda bland.

Stubby bottle, Very nice!

This poured a pleasant dark red with a fairly minimal head that did not last very long. Smell is very nice, caramel and sweet malt. This is reflected in the flavor as well, the caramel and malt aroma is prominent with a bitter finish. Carbonation is very mild, making this surprisingly smooth and easy to drink.

Not bad at all.

I just brought this back from my trip to Toronto this week. A nice thick head when tasted by itself was all hop bitterness. Aroma was sweet and nutty. Dark Amber color. Hop bitterness is immediate on the palate but fades in and out nicely with the sweet malt flavors all the way to the finish. I also detected a few hints of caramel, toffee maybe? Just another sweet taste from the malt that came through. Greta thick lacing from this beer as well. A simple offering but very drinkable.

Light coffee darkish, lace in glass. Crowning head. Bit of chocolate malt aroma. Bit of taste though a lagerish one. Lower than average carbonation for an Ontario beer. On the sweet side, very little bitterness, drop of roast. Summerhill LCBO Festival.

Retro stubbie bottle pours a light cola colored beer in the tumbler. Much lighter brown that the Dunkels I'm used to drinking.

Light nose....some sweetness, succulent fruits and a bit of toasted grain..not as malty-aromatic as a dunkel lager.

Moderate malt spine, slightly thin body, soapy mouth feel, sharp ale-like character.

You get some of the toasted malts and sweetness up front...but just for a second...then all this pale ale fruitiness from ale yeast and sharp citrus-cedar tastes from ale hopping kicks you in the palate..the finish is wet with an-ale like "bite" an more light fruit esters... then a bittering after taste. This is a dark pale ale?

This is no dunkel in any "traditional" sense... this is a dark-malted pale ale in taste and character and as such not a bad one...the brewer tells me that this beer uses the same California Common steam beer yeast as Anchor, and is fermented at warmer ale temperatures which produce the fruity esters.

So it appears what we have here is a unique hybrid beer...it's either a dunkel steam beer or a dark cream ale...so in theat respect the only "traditional" part of this beer is the stubbie bottle :-)

Pours from the stubby bottle a nice mahogany color which light turns ruby. The frothy head has good retention and leaves sheets of lace behind. The aroma is sweet with sticky malts and a tiny bit of hops. Sweetness tends to dominate the taste. Some specialty malt grainy flavors and noticeable. Theres a tartness in the finish and not nearly enough hop flavor. The mouthfeel is coating and somewhat heavy.

This beer is malt first. Theres more sweetness than nuance though, its pretty uncomplicated and a little too sweet.

A copper coloured beer, with a sour-dough bread nose. There’s some nice herbal hop flavor in there, but some unfortunate root vegetable flavors began to creep in as well. Not nearly as malty as it should be! Not as dark or as full bodied as its name or description implies either. This one got harder and harder to drink as time went on. I prefer Heritage’s regular lager.

Very dark amber colour, a limpid and clear body, no head retention at all, a body that oily that left itself on the glass.

Smell of caramel, malt, tiny bit of chocolate.

Taste , the malt is alot present, a caramel finish that is quite smooth, some roasted flavours too, just a tiny bit, nothing much.

Tap: Poured a clear black beer with an almost non-visible head. Carbonation is quite low which doesn’t augur too well. Aroma is quite weak with a small touch of malt and hops coming out of my glass. Taste is better then expected when starting with subtle sweet taste and ending with a good bitter final. Overall, this is a good refreshing drink lacking some carbonation and probably the chocolate/nutty taste of regular dunkel.

More a deep, deep red than black, but still a dark colour. Little to no head, but lace still stuck to the glass. Good smell. Alot of malt presence. Roasted, chocolate, caramel, barley, it's one malty beer. But the hops are their to balance it. Good thing too, otherwise this would be sweeet. The malts fight the hops for control, but those hops don't give up. Thick, full body. Nice and drinkable.
