From notes on 04/16/12:
Growler from the restaurant; Poured in a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.
A - Just under one inch of very light tan creamy head with okay retention; Very dark mahogany color that approaches black; Good amount of lacing left behind
S - Pretty good showing of hops here with a nice dose of pine in some sniffs and subtle citrus in others, though pine seems to be the biggest factor here; Light amounts of roast, caramel, chocolate, and anise step forward as well
T - Nice punch of pine resin up front that dominates the taste with a medium level of bitterness tagging along; Toasty and roasty flavors show up as a sidekick; Not until the very end of the taste do subtle caramel and chocolate flavors begin to penetrate the pine and lingering peppery bitterness
M - Just under medium bodied; Moderate carbonation; Mouthfeel initially has a wet-like quality until a nice wave of dryness sets in that grows with each sip
O - I've had my eye on this beer for awhile and finally got a chance to try it. I was pleasantly surprised with this interpretation of the American Black Ale as it showcases the hops much more than many examples that I've tried in the past. The roasty and chocolate malts certainly play a role in the aroma/taste, but by and large this brew is all about the piney and bitterness characteristics. I definitely see another growler fill of this delicious beer in my future.
