The local home brew community needs this place for those of us living in the NW suburbs of Detroit. Unfortunately this establishment is under capitalized. On four separate visits over several months they have not had the inventory items needed. The owner always says the items are on order and about to be delivered ina few days. I have called a few days later and the stuff is never in stock. Not once!
One nice aspect is that they sell brew on tap... so you can have a pint while shopping. the staff is friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is more like stopping by a friends garage for a pint and some beer talk rather than some fancy brew pub.
Stan... I hope you make it dude. I will continue to give the store an opporunity for my business because the homebrew community needs to stick together.
ps.... Get a SIGN for your business.

I have been to Malty Dog three times over a several month period. Each time I visited, the shelves were quite bare and they did not have what I wanted. Half the yeast was past the "use by" date.
Each visit the owner stated that he was a new store and he expected his delivery of what he was missing by mid week. I could see this being the case once, but after 3 visits over several months, it makes me wonder if his supplies are ever coming in
I was hoping this store would work out as it is close to my house, but the owner has a long way to go to make this place worth a stop.

This is an awesome place to grab a pint. Nice atmosphere, extremely clean, and the service is top notch. I had the pleasure of trying several of the ales on tap. The IPA was very well rounded with just the right amount of bitter and flavor. Their stout was exceptional. I am not a die hard stout fan however this was extremely good. I also had the pleasure of trying their house shandy. It was a real shandy with real lemonade added to the brew. Good stuff! Hopefully this one is not just a seasonal and will be available the next time I pop in.
As a home brewer I was also impressed with the home brew supply portion of the shop which is what brought me to the store. It was fully stocked and there was a very nice selection of grains. The bartender took the recipe I brought in after pouring my first pint, gathered the ingredients, and crushed the grains for me while I had a pint. This will be my new go to spot for supplies.

As an update to fAtHanD's review the owner has received his license and is currently undergoing updates to the facility.
Keeping in mind that most of the place was under construction I was happy that he was open and willing to help me get started brewing. He has the basic supplies as well as a variety of grains that he will grind and vacuum seal when you buy them.
The owner was helpful and gave some good suggestions. His goal is to have his own recipes available for tasting and then sell the ingredients you need to make the same beer. Ingredients seemed to mostly be mix and match rather than pre-packaged kits so I'm looking forward to going back and working out some of my own styles.
Some of the priced for equipment was a little high, but not unreasonable. Some of the ratings are low mostly because supply was limited as he was getting the place ready for business. The place should be up to full swing within the next month. I hope to update the review the next time I go back.

I stopped into this place on a Sunday afternoon with a buddy and we had a hell of a time finding the place. When we called it turn out we were only a few hundred feet away. They are located next to Seros restaurant. But their only signage is on the door of the place and easy to miss.
Inside it is nice and clean and is very organized. Spoke to the owner who was eager to help and offered my friend and I a sample of two of his brews he had on hand. Very good beers. His plan is to get his microbrewers license and eventually sell his beer as well as the corresponding recipes, if one so desires.
I will be back.
