Jan. 2018: 500 ml bottle, from Ales By Mail. ABV is 4.7%. Malts are Golden Promise, Malted Wheat, Roast Barley. Hops are Admiral, Northdown, Phoenix (all UK). Ingredients include orange peel, molasses and spices. Dark amber to copper colour, moderate head, slightly off-white. Aroma of spices, cloves, allspice and nutmeg come through. There might also be some cinnamon and ginger in there. Also hints of orange peel and caramel. The flavour is malty with a hint of caramel, but is not very sweet. It is also distinctly spicy (said spices, also hints of white pepper), with fruity notes of orange peel and dark dried fruits. Earthy English hops. Good beer.

330ml bottle.
L: Glassy, red/amber colour, many streams of micro-bubbles, one finger of white head reduces to a ring plus some lacing.
S: Dark fruit & nutmeg.
T: Sweet, fruity, English malt and some stewed hops. Light bitter finish. Christmas spices are in the mix but just detract from what would otherwise be a reasonable pale ale.
F: Gentle carbonation, a bit thin, short finish.
O: Low hops, low alcohol, light body. Spices don’t add much character.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Nov 2013. Picked up recently from Booths. Described on the label as a golden ale containing spices/ingredients previously soaked in rum. Peace beer with you....
Poured into a straight pint glass. A bright golden-amber hue with good carbonation. Yields a large head of white foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding. Aroma of light, fruity hops, hints of white grape, mild warming spice, ale yeast and stewed leaves. Faint undertones of diacetyl, though not too serious in this instance.
Tastes of fruity hops and subtle spice, with a dry bitter finish. Notes of white grape, melon, faint citrus, nondescript spice, stewed hops, wood and mild earthiness. There is a warm, spirit-like quality in the background, along with a twinge of diacetyl. Dry and slightly harsh, with a restrained bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and a tad prickly, with pleasant carbonation and decent body. Somewhat astringent, with an aftertaste of stewed leaves, faint spice and a woody acridness.
Not bad, though it's a bit of an odd Christmas brew. Very much a golden/pale ale with faint hints of spice and rum. The aromatic hops are quite fruity and lend a white wine flavour to the beer. I reckon that a darker, spicier brew might have suited the season better, as the juxtaposition of fruity hops and spices is a bit odd. Ilkley's bottles would also benefit from conditioning with live yeast. Decent if not outstanding, and worth trying if you stumble across it.
