A 500ml bottle with a BB of May 2013. Picked up a while back from Booths. Described on the label as a hoppy, spicy Yorkshire ale. Hopped with Galena and Brewers Gold.
Poured into a tulip pint glass. A clear coppery-amber hue with medium carbonation. Forms a large head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a thin surface layer. Some lacing. The aroma is sour, with a dominant note of lactic acid. Hints of caramel malt, mild vinegar, faint grain and stewed leaves. Some fruitiness, which could be aromatic hops. Not as expected and not particularly pleasant.
Tastes of mild caramel malt with a decidedly acidic twang and a dry finish. Notes of lactic acid, faint caramel, earthy yeast, a hint of vinegar, odd fruity flavours and stewed leaves. Very dry, with a stale, cardboard note in the background. A sour character with a subtle bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and lightly tingly. Body is OK, but could be thicker and the carbonation could be spritzier. Highly astringent, with an aftertaste of of acidic caramel malt and harsh stewed leaves/veg.
Yuck - obviously this did not live up to expectations. I'm assuming it's infected and/or oxidised, although there was nothing in the appearance to indicate deterioration (clear, no sign of growth and still carbonated). The primary aroma/flavour is a lactic sourness with a hint of vinegar. Some beeriness remains underneath, but it doesn't really match the description on the label. I guess I picked a bad bottle; will try to re-review at some point. Until then, caveat emptor.
