Picked up a 750ml at Wegman's for 3.99 or 4.99, dirt cheap. Unbelievably solid for the price. Spot on for an English stout.

 

750 ml bottle. black, with thick head. good flavor, milky chocoalte flavor, but not too sweet. nice thick mouthfeel. If you happen to see it, give it a try.

 

 

 

 

 

 

A: The beer is very close to being jet black in color—traces of red are present near the bottom of the glass when it is held up to a bright light. It poured with a quarter finger high light tan head that does down, leaving a thick collar around the edge and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of dark malts and licorice are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and has lots of flavors of black licorice along with hints of dark and roasted malts.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a little thin on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer seems to taste a lot more like a Baltic Porter compared to a milk stout because I don't get any lactose flavors in the taste.

750 ml bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky tan head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, toast, brown bread, herbal, grass, pear, apple, light pepper, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt, earthy hops, and fruity yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, toast, brown bread, herbal, grass, light pepper, light fruitiness, and roast/yeast earthiness. Slight earthy hop/roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, toast, dark bread, herbal, grass, light pepper, and roast/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of roasted/bready malt and moderate earthy hop/yeast ester flavors; with good robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and moderately creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice English milk stout. All around good complexity and robustness of roasted/bready malt and moderate earthy hop/yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

 

Slow poured from this corked bomber, little head, dissipated to nothing fairly soon. I expect that, though, I like to pour slower than one should.

Smell a little faint - I'm not sure what I'm getting here - molassis, wet previously burnt wood and alcohol. A bit strange, but not overpowering at all. There is some sweetness, toffee maybe, that is most prominent.

Taste is a little wierd for a milk stout, a little alcoholey, cocoa, more smoke or that burnt wood stuff I guess. I don't know why I'm saying that, it doesn't make sense, but, well, that's what it is. To me. Maybe I'm off today. ...or always!...

Okay, the mouthfeel. This, to me, is making it difficult to assess the rest. It's watery and limp. Going flat fast.

Overall, I'd say skip this one. I don't say that often. Usually I'll say "it's not my style, but if you see it.." - well, milk stouts are my style, and this one is not fessing up to its style. I've got a friend that I owe a favor, and I'm paying him back in beer. Almost anything goes, I'm picking things I think he would enjoy. Milk stouts are top of that list. ....um, I will NOT be offering up this one, it just doesn't cut it, not even as a give-away "hey try this" bottle.
