I bought this 75cl bottle years ago while visiting the lovely village of Rochehaut. It was a warm summers day and I found it in a small shop. The label reads: Brewed and bottled by Caulier brewery for "L'Auberge de la ferme".
It was standing in an unplugged fridge for a few years untill I found it last week when we started using the fridge again.
The expiry date on it reads 05/18. Well, we're just about two years later. Curious how it survived it's stay in my home.
I popped the top and it didn't paint the surroundings, possitive!
Pours a beautiful amber-red. Head is quite foamy and dissapears quickly. While pouring, the carbonation is very audible.
Odour is rich and fruity, mostly pears and dades with funky yeast, but I also get a rich mead.
The flavour is rich in golden honey, topped with malty caramel and wild yeast. It's full and creamy. Pears again, soft and pleasant. The aftertaste brings that honey mead back. It makes for a more dry sensation (reminds me of Barbãr). The aftertaste becomes thiner and fades out, exposing some alcohol and pure chocolate in the end.
After two glasses, the alcohol does catch up.
Conclusion? How did they ever stop brewing this??? It's delicious. Truly a session discovery! I'm always a bit weary of these "touristy" brews, hence the reason I forgot it in an unplugged fridge for three years. But wauw, is this the one to prove me wrong.
P.S.: I mentioned it was a 75cl bottle. I needed a while to get to the bottom. Wauw, I poured out the lower end of this liquid candy surprise and boom, my glass is taken over by swirly yeasty bits. The beer went all cloudy and the flavour? Well cancel all the above, strong sweet malts and trippy yeast or caramel candy in a honey yeast coating. This beer keeps on giving me nice things. It's like finding a €10 note in a pocket somewhere, so happy on the inside.
