Review from notes
The appearance is dark red, with a slightly tan head.
Smell is molasses and burnt sugar.
I taste apples and brown sugar, delicious.
There is a good amount carbonation, and it has a nice light body to it.
At 10%, it is amazingly drinkable. A very good beer.

Recomended by Jonpol at AJ's Glendale Az.
Opened the bottle....it fizzed out the top for over 5 minutes! Finally poured it into an oversised wine glass. (Thought it deserved it at the point).
Pours a cloudy dark brown. Lots anb lots of slightly brown foamy head. Coats the glass.
Smells very spicy... Peppers and alcohol spice.
Candy sugars present. Warming alcohol strong on the nose.
A balance of alcohol, candy sugars, yeast, and creamy smootheness balance this beer perfectly.
Lingering alcoholic, phenolic, and very sweet sticky aftertaste.
Moutfeel is as you guessed it..sticky sweet.
When I buy a "quad", I want it in my face! This beer is IN YOUR FACE but still very very very drinkible!

Rich, fruity notes of sweet prunes emanate from my glass as I pour this brew. It is topped by an initially two-finger thick head that is frothy in texture, clings to the side of my glass a bit and shows a lightly hazy, purplish, dark brown color. It is well carbonated with streaming bubbles of CO2 madly making there way up through the beer. The aroma is heady and sweet with dark fruit notes comprising a major component of the aromatic notes. Notes of cherries, figs, raisins and prunes, as well as a touch of fruit-like tart notes predominantly comprise the fruit driven aromatics. A touch of hot alcohol is noticeable as well, it is quite subtle and adds a not unlike that in a rich brandy. The alcohol mixes with some other spicy notes that are all quite subtle, but at times remind me of pepper, clove, perhaps a touch of cardamom or even nutmeg and a touch of ginger. Interestingly enough, as I dig around a bit more into the aroma the sweet cherry component takes on a larger, more prominent role. There is lots of layered malt character here as well; in addition to the malt driven part of the fruit notes, there are aromas of caramelized, brown sugar encrusted sweet breads and even some notes of molasses.
The first sip leaves me a touch surprised; it is quite a bit drier than I was expecting, based on my reflections of the aroma. This is sweet though and even lightly tart. It almost has a tamarind like character to it. Fruity notes of concentrated sweet / tart plums and plump, lightly caramelized raisins add a softness to this brew that is quite nice. In fact, while this is quite flavorful (even largely so), this beer is defined by its soft, smooth, mouth coating character that makes is oh so drinkable, yet rich and satiating at the same time.
This beer really is about the balance that it strikes. The mixture of richness, light sweetness, tart character, lightly spicy hotness, mouth coating richness, yet reasonable quaffability make for a beguiling brew that just begs to be experienced sip after sip.

Vintage 2006, poured from a 330ml bottle into a Duvel tulip glass.
Body is a deep dark brown color, topped by a huge, thick tan head almost the consistency of meringue. Aroma of figs, cinammon, and clove at first, with some sweet malt and tangy Belgian yeast emerging after a few minutes. Palate is complex, with dark sweet malt and dark fruit forming a strong base, with notes of brown sugar, clove, and candied figs in the background. Body is creamy, but can be a bit foamy if you're not careful. Overall, a delight to drink, although a bit sweeter than I usually go for in a quad.

Huge off-white head with a dark brown body that looks like mop water in the glass.
Raisin, dark fruit, maple syrup all are in the nose. Very creamy smelling as well.
Incredibly smooth beer, hints of honey, licorice, toffee and some fruits that I can't make out.
Light bodied, hardly any carbonation.
Super easy drinking, I'm not sure what the vintage on this was but it was unbelievably drinkable.

Dark brown color. Beautiful foam, light brown in color, very compact and sticky.
The smell is fruity, with strawberry (and other berry), chewing gum, grape-fruit, melon. Sugary, with candy sugar.
Light touch of caramel, and point, very light, of coffee. A lot of notes, interesting. A little too sugary.
The taste is very sweet, with candy sugar. Again the fruity notes of the smell, but unbalanced toward the sweet side. Alcohol not too perceptible.
But definitely too sweet, and boring.
Even at the second taste (second bottle after some weeks), nothing to die about.
Very fruity aftertaste, with peach, melon, and a lot (really, too much) of candy sugar.

2005 Bottle
Aroma is full of fresh blueberries/blackberries I mean HUGELY full of it. Its like sticking your nose in a bush. A berry bush ya perv! Also get lots of black licorice, sweet bread dipped in molasses and some spicy alcohol. Body is a murky brown with a magnificent creamy tan head that is a full two fingers thick, extra fluffy and long lasting. Fore is sweet candi sugar, molasses, bready sweet malts, mashed berries, perfumey alcohol. Very desert like and could be cloying if I wasnt in the mood for it. Still its a lovely beer and a real treat.

Bottle (vintage 2005): Poured opaque dark brown ale with a super huge foamy dirty brown head with perfect retention. Aroma of liquorice and sweet malt is incredibly well balance. Taste is an almost perfect balance between strong sweet malt with caramel and liquorice with some candi sugar (I would say a bit too much though) with a slightly funky ending from the yeast. Body is full and alcohol is very well masked. This beer is almost like a sweeter version of Rochefort 10 and there is not much more praise I can give to this beer.

one-year-old bottle. label talks of licorice, spices, and candy sugar used in recipe. creamy head stays till the end. incredibly complex nose. so creamy and full bodied. enormously complex and flavorful. dark ripe and dried fruits. plum, prune, raisin, chocolate, coffee, gingerbread, roasted malty flavors and burnt flavors too. more complex than I can describe with my limited palate. enormously rich in the mouth.
sampled a young bottle and found it overly harsh, less rich, less complex, with aggressive ginger flavors taking charge. definitely wait a year.

Vintage 2005 BBE 04- 2007 and 2008. Overwelming and lasting head and a dark brown, almost bluck beer under it. Nose is very fruity remembering mostly to strawberries and has great dark candy behind it. Good caramellic maltyness to compleet a fresh as spring nose that has a litle sharp "barn"like musty hint but hard to define or litle celary like? Not disturbing though.
Great taste also but maybe Litle oversweet. Good candy and liqurice plus full maltyness backed by high but not that noticable alcohol. Low bitterred but fits this brew that sometimes comes more as a fermented fruitcoctail then a beer. Quiet well balanced and a litle honey like mouthfeel, thick and sweet. Well carbonated and easy drinkable. Certainly something else and that with a great taste too IMHO.

A novelty of licorice and great beer, with candi and carmel and brown sugar. Very smooth and a treat to the palate. Brownish colour. Aggressive carbonation Unique and worth trying, but a sweet novelty nevertheless. Thanks Mr. Madsberg, delivery from Denmark.

2004 bottle. Two thumbs up to Jeppe for introducing me to that piece of cake. Lasting beige foam head covers a musty brown body. Heavy molasses hit you first in the sea of dark fruits (dates, fennel, figs etc.) Very deep malt aroma, no alcohol sensation at all, but a certain rummy feel. Raisins, smoke, abbaye des rocs like powerful esters and coriander/cardamom plus tea tannins. Rich toasty malt still has plenty of residual sugars bathing in an herbal garden. Drying nicely in mouth despite the massive sweetness. A fruit bacchanalia. Toffee, banana, corn, candi sugar and mellow leafy bitterness closes the encounter. Lightest carbonation, medium bodied.. Phenomenal stuff, I definitely prefer this over a rochefort and possible over a westy, unadulterated sweetness glory. Congratulations!

Vintage 2005: given to me by a friend.
Appearance: Pours a turbid dark brown brew with a trothy head that seems to last for quite a while. Even though it gets a lot smaller after a while, it never really dissapears. Some yeast sediment that resided at the bottom of the bottle topped the head with a brown stain. the creamy texture of the foam leaves some lacing. Looks excellent.
Smell: Almonds, Plums, Caramel. Doughy and Sweet. Deliciously complex.
Taste: Delicious, but incredibly sweet. Too sweet & too tasty at the same time. Caramels, fruits (plums & pineapple?), malts, brown sugar and vague spices. I listed this as being a Strong Dark Ale but with the complex, sweet mix of caramels, malts, fruits and spices it could've just as well been a Quadrupel. It's as least as complex as Quadrupels like Rochefort 10 and St. Bernardus bt 12 too, but the sweetness sets it apart.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied, luscious, round and slightly cloying. Hardly drinkable, although I doubt that's the point of this beer.
Conclusion: Too sweet? Unbalanced? Definitely.
Unique and Tasty? You bet.
If you can find this one, try it. You might like it and then again you might not. Either way t'll be a very intensive experience.
