a rye stout brewed with hazelnuts and just another intriguing and delicious beer from these guys that i wish was either a little fresher or handled a little better on the way to me, because it has so much promise, but also is full of chunky coagulated sediment and has some oxidation, i can only imagine what this was like when it was brand new and closer to the source! still, like mikkeller and some other weird danish beers i love so much, its worth trying and drinking even though it isnt in optimal form anymore. the pour is deep brown, not as dark as expected, with some floaties in it under a very active almost belgian looking white head. i smell the hazelnuts right away, and they seem quite natural to me, not a syrup or anything, but a protein rich, essential oily, actual hazelnut, very cool and gorgeous with the medium roasted dark malts and all the cocoa and coffee character coming from them. the flavor is the same, but there is a bit of oxidation here which makes the beer seem tired. i get a cool earthiness, maybe from the rye malt, but it almost tastes like raw mushrooms that havent been scrubbed all the way clean, a cool layer for sure and a nice grounding element for the adjunct. insane carbonation, perhaps overdeveloped in the bottle, but this fizzes and expands like a soda. in the end i like the beer quite well, but wish i got to experience it in pristine original condition. thats the problem with these relatively unknown beers, their format, and their price points, but still well worth it i would say, i love thee guys! great use of the nuts here.

Black with dark chocolate highlights. A dense, dark chocolate foam lingers at three inches before leaving a webbing of lace on a Pretentious Beer Glass Company snifter.
The aroma is dominated by sweet roasted fudge, followed by currants. Roasted nuts and black coffee drift in the background.
This is much more bitter than expected. However, the sweet notes are still present. Dark roasted cocoa nibs and black coffee are the primary notes. A long, bold finish brings out the nuts while cola, a light astringency, molasses and ash develop with warmth.
The texture is sticky and syrupy while the body is medium to full. Alcohol is greater than expected, as is the fizzy carbonation.
This is an interesting beer, well suited for conversation or a cigar.
Interestingly, this bottle was purchased one year prior to drinking. All along, I wondered if the name referred to the light passing through the stout. Coincidentally, I only recently saw the movie and still didn't recognize the name reference until reading the label."

To Øl You Shall Nut Pass!, 7.2% ABV. Pours black with medium viscosity and a three finger tan head. Nose is coffee, roasted malt, hazelnuts, and chocolate. Taste follows with some sweetness, and slight bitter close. Excellent mouthfeel, overall excellent. The hazelnuts are there, but not overpowering.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from an 11.2 oz. bottle into a Cigar City El Catador teku glass.
A: Dark brown and essentially opaque, with a finger's worth of dense tan head with average retention. Fairly low amount of visible carbonation, and some chunky sediment settles to the bottom of the glass. Not bad, but not beautiful.
S: Hazelnut and chocolate about in balance. Coffee, dark roasted malts, hints of vanilla and smoke in the roastiness. Not honestly a huge aroma, but it’s acceptable.
T: Hershey's chocolate and some sweet hazelnut and vanilla. Dark roasted malts add balance of bitterness and sweetness. There’s definitely some smoky character here – not overly “Band-Aid”, but somewhat acerbic. I get more on some sips than others – it doesn’t dominate but I could do without it. As the sweet malts fade after the swallow, the hop bitterness shows up with just a bit of lingering smoke.
M: Medium-bodied for a stout, so long as you keep in mind that this isn’t an Imperial Stout. The alcohol presence is low, and has average carbonation sensation for style.
O: While there's certainly some hazelnut in here, when you name your beer something like this you gotta bring it. And this didn’t. The smoke is a personal preference thing that I could do without. But I’d file this as more “notes of hazelnut”, than a hazelnut bomb. It’s not a bad sweet/smoky stout – but that’s rarely something I’d look for, and even if I were there are better ones out there.

Appearance is a sleek black with a thin laced head and not many bubbles streaming up.smell is dark roast coffee, char, lightly smoked nutty smell.some undertones of stone fruit.the Taste is expresso, raisins, bacon, not much chocolate, but a slight bittersweet chocolate at the finish.a bit overly smoky, char flavor, not a huge fan.mouthfeel,it's a bit of a thinner stout but creamy...overall I did not taste any hazelnut in this beer,it tasted like a smoked imperial porter.i will not be buying or drinking this beer again.

12oz bottle. Served in a snifter glass. Dark brown body, cola coloured with a half finger offwhite head, short retention. Looks like a porter or stout, as you'd expect. Smell is mostly tobacco, light leather, milk chocolate, touch of raisin. No hazelnut to be found. A bit of smoke and char. Flavour follows the nose; not a single molecule of hazel nut or even generic nuttiness is to be found; it is a leathery, milk chocolate and dark fruited stout with a slight smoke to it. That's about it. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, lighter on carbonation, smoke and light earthy bitterness on the finish. Nothing special, and certainly not very much hazelnut was in this beer. So if that's what you're looking for, I'd probably just save my money.

33cl bottle. Dark mahogany with a very tall beige head. Smells nutty, of roasted malts and subtle metal. Roasty bitter, with a strong dark chocolate and roasted coffee flavor. More bitter than most sweet stouts, which is always a plus.

Pours a dark chocolate color with a light mocha head. Aroma is roasted malts and nutty. Flavor is roasty but a light. You get the hazel nut and roasted malts but overall the flavor is kinda light and there more subtle flavors that out front. It drinks kind of thin for a stout. Overall it's solid but had hoped for more hazel nut flavor.

Black color with mocha head. Aroma is sweet with chocolate and some dark cherries. Taste starts also on the sweet side with a slight fruitiness. Finish is more earthy with a slight nuttiness on the aftertaste. Body is smooth and creamy with lower carbonation. I am not really getting hazelnuts but overall it's a really nice, tasty and smooth stout.
