Chama River Dr. StrangeHop

Growler into a medium snifter

An aggressive pour generates a one inch white head that leaves a nice bit of lace. The body is perfectly clear light orange with gold highlights. Pretty beer.

Nose is intensely inviting. Layers and layers of hop glory, grapefruit peel, tangerine, peach, tropical fruit basket, a faint bit of malt to provide just a bit of balance, but this DIPA is all about the hops.

Taste is on point with the nose, lots of tangerine, orange peel, grapefruit, salty hop leaf. My God, the hops are just layered on top of one another, and yet this isn't overpoweringly bitter, just lots of complexity on the hop front. Oh yeah, there is some malt in there too. I think.

The mouthfeel is moderate and perfectly carbonated, not fizzy or flat, just a nice solid mouthfeel.

This is probably my favorite thing to come from Chama, and that is saying something considering that I really dug the Sleeping Dog Stout. This beer is 8.7% ABV, but you could have fooled me, this bad boy drinks like a mellow APA. This is good stuff, and I'm not even a huge DIPA fan, but this I could drink probably every day. And then some. This gets and "A".

The Dr. Strangehop was an extremely hoppy brew - but in a really good way. The cloudy and light amber look of the beer was nice, but it was the fragrant citrus aroma was what really sold me on the beer. Compared to another local Imperial IPA (from Marble), I feel like the Dr. Strangehop Imperial IPA was far more masterfully blended so that the bitterness was illustrated in the beer, but not so up-front that it overpowered the beer. The beer's aftertaste was nice in that it lingered for a little bit, but did not outright dissipate. For being at 120+ IBUs and 8.9% ABV, this was indeed a potent brew, but it was very drinkable and enjoyable over a nice crab cake and green chile stew.

Appearance - 3.5/5.0 - The cloudiness was semi-unique for an IPA and the color was very appealing.
Scent - 4.5/5.0 - The citrusly fragrance was really appealing and inticing to drink.
Taste - 4.5/5.0 - Hoppy, bitter, but well blended to make for a high quality taste.
Feel -4.0/5.0 - Strong taste that lingered, but not in a bad way.
Drinkability - 4.5/5.0 - If I was in the mood to drink potent Imperial IPAs all day, this would be a beer I would pick as part of the rotation.

On tap at the brewpub in mid-August 2009.

A: A little bit on the lighter side. This pours a mostly-golden color with a decent amount of head and pretty good lacing as it goes down.

S: Tropical fruits and a bit of spiciness in the hop profile on this one. The hops are quite nice, but they're not enough to dazzle the senses, and there isn't too much backing them up. Overall, definitely on of the brewery's best in this department.

T: Much like the smell--a good hop bill that definitely doesn't take the backstage to the malt or any other component of the beer, yet at the same time there's something that's not quite completing this one.

M: Pretty good carbonation and a medium body, although the alcohol might be a bit too prevalent. I preferred the smoother mouthfeel and drinkability of the standard Jack Rabbit IPA.

D: Very good to have a taste of, but not one that I just couldn't put down.
