Malt Bomb, Warming, Toasty, Bold
Sip after sip it’s clear that the brewery’s intention was to not only nail the style, but to show everyone else up and then take it up another notch. Fun As Helles is something of a malt bomb yet well balanced, resting at a quite drinkable 8.5 percent. The nuances line up perfectly and everything meshes well. Its spicy, herbal, earthy hop profile is an ideal match for the massively sweet and toasty malt backbone. Warm, which isn’t to take away from sipping this Maibock with satisfaction. Pretty damn spectacular.

On-tap at Three Cellars, Franklin, WI:
Pours copper with a thin head that leaves little lacing.
The smell is of caramelized bread with earthy/herbal hops.
The taste is of malt sweetness with balancing herbal/tea-like hops. Alcohol dryness in the finish.
It is full-bodied - a bit syrupy.
This is certainly not your typical maibock - more of a blonde doppelbock...even then...not in the traditional German style. An interesting brew - a very strong lager. Sweet, though hop aroma and taste do stand out. A unique brew that is certainly worth trying.

Color was a little deeper than expected. Smell was a nice malty sweetness with subtle citrus hop notes coming through. Taste was a mouthful of malt but with a good balance of bitterness and hop flavor at the end. Label says notes of honey, caramel and hazelnuts in flavor which are subtle but there and nice. No alcohol burn, and good malt/hop balance and great mouthfeel. Solid beer and would buy again.
