I order this beer frequently from the Alcatraz Brewery whenever I stop by. I call it a good "warm up" beer in my opinion, eases me into their others.

Appearance: Its golden, and despite it being a wheat, its not terribly cloudy. Very small head.

Smell: It smells fine. I've had good wheat, and it smells much the same. Nothing distinct about it though.

Taste: Very smooth and entirely drinkable. Light on any bitter taste before or after. But it lacks the more subtle flavors that make it characteristic of other wheats. I'm under the impression that if you're having to add a wedge of orange or lemon to the beer, you better bring something unique. And its not that.

Don't misunderstand, this is a good tasting drink; but it does nothing to put itself above and beyond.

Mouthfeel: Very light aftertaste, fairly clean feel. Strange, considering what it is.

Overall: I like it. While its nothing stellar, it certainly doesn't do worse than Blue Moon as a wheat, though its not better than a Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse. But for their happy hour prices, you can do much much worse.

4 oz tap pour in a mini American tumbler pint glass. 4.5% ABV. Had at Alcatraz Brewing Co. at The Block in Cali.

A - The color is an incredibly pale straw yellow with a low white head and no lace left over. A weaker wheat appearance if I've ever seen one.

S - Weiss Guy starts off low in the nose with a small bit of yeastiness but really doesn't get any deeper at all. From there, pale malts and wheat relax in the background.

T - Lots of soft wheat populates the flavor but there is no real substance here. No good malt backing and no hops to be found. All yeast characteristics besides "yeast" flavor are absent too.

M - Weiss Guy comes across thin and light-bodied with a lack of flavor and substance. A carbonation finish and tickle ends this beer.

D - This wheat beer is easily drinkabile but it's cleaver name won't save it. Not enough is going on anywhere in this beer as it lacks in all regards.

On-tap at Alcatraz (Orange)

A: Just what you'd expect from the style. A hazy yellow pour with a bit of white head. At least this one didn't come with a slice of fruit.

S: The aroma is that of wheat with a slight tartness that seems to be required in these American wheat beers.

T: The flavor is similar to the nose with perhaps a touch of citrus (not lemony sourness) along with the wheat.

M: Quite watery and thin in terms of body with a moderate level of carbonation.

D: This is a "slamming" beer. Very little taste or body and easy to drink a lot of.

A pint served in a pint glass.

A: Not much of a head on this ice tea looking brew. Not much lacing and head retention minimal.

S: Lemony citris aroma with a hint of wheatiness. But not much yeastiness, bubble gum or cloves in this one.

T: Like it smells and it ends rather dry. A crisp beer.

M: Light to medium feel.

D: This beer didnt grow on me too much. But not a bad beer, I'd just go with the others at Alcatraz first. I got this one on special.

On tap at the Anaheim location.

Poured a medium and slightly hazy yellow color with a small sized white head. Aromas of grains with some wheat. Tastes of basically the same. maybe a trace of citrus if I stretch it. Thinner body. I'm glad to have tried this 1st place winner from the 2007 LA County Fair (as proudly stated on the beer menu).

Consumed at brewery, 03/17/08.

Beer is a slightly cloudy light yellow color. There is the usual thin skin of foam atop the beer with a few bubbles rising here and there.

No aroma I could detect, which is not good for a wheat beer.

The mouthfeel is a little chewy/thick, which is nice.

This beer has the usual American Wheat flavor profile, which is to say almost flavorless as compared to its German cousins. There is a mild wheat flavor with accompanying metallic tang. Some barley malt flavor peeks through. There is no bitterness and no yeast flavors.

This was the least flavorful of the six beers on tap during my visit.

I personally find this style of beer boring and cannot understand why it is so popular with brewpubs.
