On-tap at Alcatraz (Orange)

A: The pour is a dark brown/cola color with a thin off-white head.

S: A very heavy roast to the nose, unusual for a doppelbock. Mildly acidic with some dark fruit notes of cherries and prunes. A less pronounced sweetness than you would expect with dark chocolate and molasses.

T: The beer starts out with a cola sweetness and some hints of cherries and plums. Very roasty and much more bitter than I've ever experienced in a doppelbock. Some alcohol notes on the finish, which is harsh overall.

M: The body is medium with a smooth carbonation. Unfortunately, the finish is sort of ruined by the alcohol presence.

D: I was looking forward to this out of all the fall seasonals, but must say I was let down. This was more of a German Porter than a doppelbock, anyway.

Poured a dark chocolate brown along with brown highlights that had a thin khaki color head and left some frothy lacing sticking to the glass. The aroma had caramel, brown sugar, and maple but I also detected molasses character with faint toastiness. The flavor was pretty sweet from the caramel and maple notes but had toasty, molasses, and nutty accents. The brew was medium to full in body with a good amount of carbonation which had a sweet, light toasty, and creamy finish. It drank good and was a solid dopplebock offering even though I'm not a big fan of the style.

One of the seasonals on-tap the last time I visited the brewpub in Orange, CA. Clear, deep reddish brown with an inch of creamy, beige head. Good retention, thick chunky lace. Toasted malt and caramel smells. Flavor has lots of caramel, toasted nuts, definatley on the sweeter side. Dry, earthy finishy. Moderately full body. Higher alcohol warms nicely.
