On-tap at Alcatraz (Orange)

A: The beer pours an amber color with a little more than a finger of khaki colored head.

S: Fairly heavy on the bread and malt aromas with a bit of toast to it as well. Spicy and floral hops are really the only hop aromas (other than some pine) which is quite different for an American IPA, not sure I'm really a huge fan.

T: Spicy, floral, and piney hops on the palate with only a mild bitterness. Heavy on the bread flavor and quite sweet. This is far too caramelly and matly for my liking. There's also a bit of a papery feel to it, sort of like the skins on peanuts.

M: Medium to full in body with a medium level of carbonation.

O: Not really what I was anticipating. Way too sweet and not really that great of flavors otherwise.

Sampled 5/8/2011 at the brewpub.

Pours dark golden, clear, tall white head, good retention and lacing.

Aroma is hoppy (mostly pine with a little fruit) with plenty of sweet malt in the background.

Flavor is sweet, kind of heavy, fruity, a touch of ash (?), weed, and a little body odor. Hoppy, strange, spicy, not bad. Could stand to be dried out a bit and a little less malt extract-like.

Body is medium/heavy, and surprisingly good, though it could use a few improvements.
