This Belgian style strong golden ale is a warming 9%, has awesome notes of plum and ripe fruit and a distinct malty finish. Emma Goldman was a noted anarchist lecturer, an agitator for free speech, a champion of the arts and a pioneer advocate of birth control. Wow!

Pours a radiant orange-copper hue and is topped with a nice rocky cap of froth; lace ensues. The brew is spicy, bready, fruity and alcoholic, just the way I like my BSPA. Pear and apricot notes are suggested, in addition to the pepper and clove imparted by the yeast, and minerality is notable. The feel is softly effervescent and somewhat creamy. Though it is not stellar in any particular way, this is passably Belgian in all aspects.

On-tap at Haymarket. Served in a 4oz taster glass.

A - Lightly hazed apricot body, and a finger of white foam that settles to a near-complete cap and thicker ring, leaving behind glass-coating lace. Pretty much perfect for the style.

S - Peppery, spicy yeast, some stone fruits, and a bready malt backdrop.

T - Taste is quite spicy, with some estery alcohol. Notes of candi sugar and vanilla, but not overly sweet, as the bread and yeast character is the main flavor component.

M - Smooth medium body, reasonably well-hidden alcohol, lower carbonation, and a lightly sticky finish.

D - Much better than Lucy, although this was a bit too spicy and yeasty to be a complete success in my book - could use a bit more sweetness. Easy enough to drink with a nice texture and minimal alcohol presence.

A: Caramel light brown in color, good head retention and medium lacing. Off white head of foam.

S: Had a grainy quality to it in aroma, slightly fruity but more earthy than traditional belgian ester.

T: Boozy. Unfortunately wasnt able to mask as well as the dubbel but with 9% abv, its gonna get through. This one was more accentuated to do so with a hoppyness in the nose.

M: Booze burnt the palate a bit.

D: I dont think you'd want to go back to back with this, but it was a nice sampler.
