Named after the 'kalmbach and geisel' brewery owned by Dr Seuss' great grandfather,this dark Belgian strong ale is brewed with saaz hops, 6 different specialty malts, Belgian trappist yeast and spiced with clove, nutmeg and cinnamon!

I like this beer for its wordplay on Kulmbach and Geisel, which was apparently Dr. Suess' family brewery. Dr. Suess rules. The brew is a chestnut-mahogany hue, and is capped by a wispy ecru head. This beer is apparently flavored with winter spices; it seems mulled cider seasonings are at play here. Nutty and toffee-ish malt is apparent, but the dark fruit I'd expect from the style is nowhere to be found. Alcohol is not really noticed. It reminds me of Anchor's Christmas ales, in the way of being softly spiced, softly carbonated and mildly sweet. No outstanding, but I like it.

A - Transparent dark nut brown/wood-colored body. Thin white foam that settles to a thin haze and ring. Minimal lace.
S - Reminds me a little of Kuhnhenn Stollen, but not as intense in spices. Still, there is a good amount of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves - Christmas in May! Some nuts, milk chocolate, and sweet toffee notes.
T - Taste is also quite spiced, and for some reason I liked it less than the aroma due to the bitter spice finish. Some nuts and sugary sweetness mid-palate.
M - Bready, chewy, medium-body, medium-low carbonation, and only faint warmth in the finish. Definitely my favorite thing about this beer.
D - I didn't have high expectations, as this is generally not the sort of beer I enjoy. This was about exactly what I expected, so I'll give them credit for delivering. If you like spiced Belgian ales, this might be right up your alley.

A: Darky roasty to reddish in color. Light brown head of foam.
