This 'MidWestian' dark ale, a recipe by our own Janna Mestan, is brewed with Belgian Ale yeast, Dark Candi Syrup, German specialty malts and loads upon loads of Warrior and Cascade hops. A huge, pitch black ale with notes of pine, citrus, candy sugar, caramel and chocolate. Come see the 'Beer Carol' and find out how only this beer can save Tiny Tim! Hurry, it's his only hope!

On-tap at Haymarket. Served in a 4oz taster glass.
A - Initially appears black, but there is a reddish glint at the edges of the glass. A finger of dark tan foam settles to a partial cap, collar, and splotchy lace patches.
S - Bananas, phenolic yeast, black, roasted, and chocolate malts, baker's chocolate, hint of marshmallow and candi sugar. Some alcohol is present as the beer warms up.
T - Not a ton of overt hop flavor, but there is some surprising bitterness in the finish - I guess that's the 'IPA' part of this beer. Heavy on the black and charry malts, with some yeasty bread but less of the overtly phenolic and banana/bubblegum Belgian yeast flavors found in the aroma.
M - Medium-full body, dry texture that's a touch gritty. Lower carbonation, and fairly well disguised alcohol content. Finishes with some light candi sugar stickiness, but is otherwise mostly clean.
D - This beer delivers exactly what it promises, hitting all the stylistic check boxes - hop bitterness, Belgian yeast, candi sugar, black malts, high alcohol, etc. That being said I wish there was more hop aroma and flavor present, as this combination of flavors and styles isn't something I find particularly appealing. Fairly easy to drink at 10% and one of Haymarket's better Belgian (Belgo?) offerings - worth trying at least once.
