The Belgian colonial state in the Congo was often referred to by locals as "Bula Matari," meaning "Break Rocks." To pave their way through the lower Congo, the Belgians used dynamite to crush rocks, thus earning them this nickname which came to signify the irresistible and compelling force of the new colonial state. This well balanced black ale is hopped with Nugget and Willamette and is perfect for those prolonged sessions.

On-tap at Haymarket. Served in a 4oz taster glass.
A - Off-white foam settles to a thin collar, a few wisps, and a bit of splotchy lace. Very dark brown body with some transparent ruby highlights.
S - Belgian yeast is front and center, with some phenolic notes, hint of pepper, and a hefty dose of cocoa, roasted grains, and licorice. Lots of flavor for only 4%.
T - Taste is fairly similar, with notes of chocolate, dark fruits, roasted malts, yeasty dark bread, and anise. Less phenolic than the aroma, and a touch more schwarzbier-esque.
M - Unsurprisingly it's thin and watery, but that's not totally unexpected. Guessing this is the second runnings of Black Betsy. Lower carbonation, grainy texture.
D - Solid beer for what it is, but nothing mind-blowing. A nice change-of-pace offering if you need something with less alcohol and/or less hoppy.

This pours a dark red-black color. I get a floral aroma with some smoke around the edges. I don’t think it’s smoked, but I don’t mind. It gives the beer some nuance and complexity in a way I was not expecting at all.
The flavor has a pleasing roastiness with some smoked malt rounding it out. Finishes dry. I enjoyed this and welcomed the surprise smoke!

This beer was a nice clear dark brown, not quite black, with a thin off white head.
The nose was light with just a touch of smoke and chocolate.
The flavor is light with hints of chocolate, dark roasted barley, a touch of smoke and just a bit of coriander. There is a very mild earthy hop presence.
The mouthfeel is light and thin.
This an interesting beer, the fact that its only 4% makes it a bit thin and light on flavor, but there is still enough going on to make it drinkable and enjoyable, would make a nice session black ale. It reminded me a lot of a very light porter with a hint of belgian yeast.
