Pours a dark chestnut/chocolate brown color that's nearly opaque with mahogany edges and a two finger dark beige head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Decent retention with sporadic streaks and spots of lace left behind.

Slightly smokey, robust dark malt aroma with roasted gourmet coffee bean and lactic cream countered by lighter malt sweetness. Coffee bean dominates the nose but isn't too forceful with hints of oatmeal, dark cacao, and charred toast. Sweeter dessert-like malts in there as well with some cake, fudge, toffee, caramel and lighter chocolate. Smells really nice with a very nice coffee presence that thankfully doesn't overpower the other characteristics.

Lighter end of medium body with dry, roasted dark malt and coffee bean flavor countered by subtle dark malt sweetness. Not as complex as the aroma hinted at with dry, almost acrid, burnt malt. Charred toast, oatmeal and bittersweet dark chocolate compliment the heavy roast. Lighter than expected and kind of watered down. Also, the sweeter notes that balanced the roast in the nose are somewhat tame. Subtle caramel, toffee and tootsie roll but doesn't have the luscious dessert/cake-like sweetness that I was expecting. Great coffee flavor but lacks complexity.

On-tap at Haymarket. Served in a 4oz taster glass.

A - Near-black body with a brownish glint at the edges. Dark tan foam settles to a partial cap and collar, leaving a few stray fingers of lacing.

S - Big coffee and nice complementary notes of chocolate, vanilla, lightly roast malts, and a bit of fruitiness that could be from malts or from the coffee.

T - The taste is significantly more bitter and burnt, with the sweetness showing up later on the palate. There's some nice chocolate and caramel, and some lightly fruity notes as well. I'm not sure if the mildly tropical note is real or just the placebo effect from reading the menu.

M - Medium body, pleasant carbonation, a touch gritty and roasty with mildly dry finish. No alcohol presence here, but I wasn't expecting any at 6.2%.

D - A very nice coffee porter that I'd happily drink again; hopefully this shows up in Haymarket's regular rotation. A pleasant surprise, as I haven't dug many of Haymarket's other porters. Also, why no Steve it to Bieber this year?
