Southside homebrew contest winner Nate Barth's recipe utilizes a touch of flaked barley, caravienne, and loads of Amarillo and Citra hops! Besides the glory of winning the best beer on the southside, Nate also got to sweat it out and make his brew here at Haymarket!

On-tap at Haymarket. Served in a 4oz taster glass.
A - A half-finger of white foam settles to a near-complete cap, leaving behind glass-coating lace. Transparent golden body.
S - Really dank and zesty hops. This particular batch of Citra hops seems to have more chive and onion and less of the juicy citrus that I generally perceive. There's a nice tangerine note, but this is more on the spicy side. Malt is fairly neutral and bready.
T - The taste is quite similar, with dank earthy and spicy notes dominating and fairly low sweetness or fruity notes. The malt is neutral and low in sweetness as well, with leaves the building moderate-high herbal bitterness a bit overwhelming.
M - Active, zesty carbonation, medium-light body, and a lightly grainy texture. Dry finish, with no obvious alcohol content.
D - I found this overly bitter due to the lack of malt balance, and also thought the Amarillo hops overpowered the Citra flavors. I had this beer about 10 days before Treebs, so perhaps it's gotten better since then? Based on his description I can't even believe we had the same beer. Didn't really dig either homebrew competition winner to be honest.

Enjoyed on tap at Haymarket. Served in a 12 oz. goblet.
A: Pours a clear amber color with a thin white head. Some splotchy lace is left behind as the beer is drunk.
S: Big notes of pineapple and fresh cantaloupe. Some light cracker malts with a little honeydew melon as well. Extremely fresh fruit and flowery notes.
T: Sweet and tropical fruits with little bursts of citrus. Some pineapple and fresh honeydew melon. Sweet cracker malts, some orange peel, and a little cantaloupe. There is a mild resinous character on the finish that's a very light bitterness.
M: Ridiculously drinkable. Light body with a medium carbonation level. The finish is sweet and fruity.
O: This was ridiculously good. I actually liked this more than the Mathias I had this day as well. Highly drinkable with a level of balance and freshness that I haven't had in an IPA in quite some time.
