On-tap at Haymarket. Served in a 5oz taster glass.
A - Lightly tanned foam settles to a near-complete cap, thick collar, and a few splotches of lace. Shockingly light, transparent pale golden body. Attractive, but unexpected.
S - Very English, with more of a strong ale vibe than a barleywine. Bread, toasted grains, lightly fruity yeast, sharp toffee, and some lightly floral and earthy hopping. A tad understated actually, even when it warms up.
T - The taste is quite similar, with a hefty dose of fruity English ale yeast, dominating a neutral grain and bread malt backdrop. Mild earthy hop bitterness in the finish. Again, takes a while to warm up. Alcohol is pretty well hidden.
M - Medium-full body, medium-low carbonation, chewy and hearty texture, with some mild residual stickiness. Again, deceptive 9% ABV.
D - If you'd have called this a 7% English Strong Ale I would have thought it was an excellent example of the style. Lacks the sweetness I expect from Barleywines like J.W. Lees, and features more fruity and earthy flavors. I didn't mind it, but I think American palates may be a bit confused by this beer.

Served in a goblet at the brewpub.
Ah, freshly-tapped English barleywine. Today's gonna be a good day. This stuff pours a clear straw topped by a half-finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises honey, light caramel, and light flowers. The taste brings in more of the same, along with some pine sap, grapefruit rind, and light grass. The body is a straight medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a smooth feel. Overall, a generally solid b-wine, but one that doesn't completely impress. Yeah, I hate being that incredibly vague and whatnot, but I can't quite put into words exactly how I feel here...
