A dark, malty robust porter brewed with cold pressed coffee from Guatemala Puerta Verde beans, roasted by our friends at Passion House Coffee Roasters. We took this complex brew and aged it in Woodford Reserve Bourbon barrels for 5 months, enhancing the vanilla and caramel flavors of the brew.

Of all places, on tap the other day at the Apex in PDX.

The beer pours a blackish brown color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is pretty impressive in this beer, as I pick up a nice intermix of milk duds, vanilla, coffee, chocolate and light licorise. The flavor profile generally replicated the nose, though I got more of a cherry, vanialla, coffee flavor on the palate. There was somel light bitterness as well on the finish, which tended to dry out the moderate sweetness a bit. Also, while good, the beer was a bit thin on the palate, and so wasn't quite as rich and lush tasting as I was hoping (and expecting). The finish was faily long otherwise, and the alcohol was well integrated into the flavor profile.

A pretty solid beer, but considering the price point, I'm not sure how often I'd want to revisit this (at least in PDX at Apex, I think the price was right at $4 for a 6 ounce pour).

On-tap at Haymarket. 12oz snifter.

A - Tan foam settles to a near-complete cap, thick collar, and specks of lacing. Opaque, dark brown body.

S - Loads of earthy bourbon and coffee. Roasted malts, espresso, and a touch of oak that grows as the beer warms up. The coffee is somewhat fruity, as I remembered from the base beer. Nice vanilla and coconut notes from the Woodford Reserve barrel.

T - The taste has a bit more malt balance to it, with caramel, vanilla, and semisweet chocolate supporting the intense coffee and bourbon flavors. Oak and sour mash whiskey dominate the finish, but there isn't much overt booziness here.

M - Creamy texture, but a bit thin for the listed 8.5%. Smooth, lower carbonation, with a mildly sticky finish and no alcohol burn. Surprisingly low tannic presence for a barrel-aged coffee beer.

D - I liked the base beer, and this is a nice twist on it. I was sad they didn't make Steve it to Bieber, but this will tide me over for the time being. As usual, Haymarket knows what it's doing with barrels. Easily drank whole glass, and probably could have had another.
