This delicious recipe was created in collaboration with our dear friends from Jerry's Sandwich Shop for their 6th Anniversary (Friday, July 12th!). This brew was made with honey malt, 10 gallons of orange blossom honey & loads of Saphir hops. The name? Well, get your mind out of the gutter…Jerry's mascot is a rooster. Haymarket's mascot is a sock monkey.

On-tap at Haymarket. 12oz tulip.

A - White foam settles to a collar, and a wispy, partial cap, along with some splotchy lacework. Hazed orange-peach body.

S - The aroma is not what I was expecting, but it's strangely compelling all the same. A melange of tropical fruits and orange blossom honey. Apparently the double infusion via honey and honey malt really amped the honey character; I like it, but I can imagine it might be polarizing for people expecting a more typical DIPA malt bill.

T - The taste is again a nice mix of honey, floral orange blossoms, citrus zest, tropical fruits, and negligible 'traditional' malt sweetness. Even though there's honey, this never comes off as cloying or saccharine. Alcohol is well-hidden and bitterness is lower than I expected. The finish is a tad odd; the Saphir hops seem to have imparted a vague herb and lemon peel flavor.

M - Medium body, lower carbonation, soft and creamy texture, and a dry finish. No obvious alcohol.

D - A very unique beer for sure, and one I enjoyed quite a bit. Not sure I'd want more of 12oz of this in an evening, but something I'd order again on a subsequent visit. Advertising this as an American DIPA might lead to unfulfilled expectations; almost a hoppy dry braggot.

Served in a chalice at the brewpub.

Bachelor Party-Palooza 2013 finishes its stay at Haymarket with another beer with only Hads to its credit (once more: come on, people!), a collaboration with a potential future stop for the Palooza (spoilers: we didn't end up there, but did pass by). It pours a clear gold-brass topped by a finger of off-white foam. The nose comprises grass, sweet biscuit, sweet flowers, and a twinge of grapefruit peel. The taste brings in more of the same, though the flavors sorta drop off near the very end due to the dryness. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, a nice enough DIPA, but one that's too dry for its own good, and one that just doesn't end up expressing itself all that well or distinctively.
