Served from tap in a taster glass at the brewpub.

Bachelor Party-Palooza 2014 (Part 1) rolls on with a surprise barrel-aged version of a beer I remember enjoying a while ago. It pours a partly-hazy sunset topaz-sienna topped by a finger of light khaki foam. The nose comprises bourbon, spiced apple pie, light toasted oak, and a bit of that caramel sauce you might put on your ice cream if you're so inclined. The taste brings in more of the same, with some bits of spicy malt backing everything up, keeping things in beer territory despite the threat of cider implied in the circumstances. A twinge of dark cocoa powder occasionally wanders in, but it keeps to itself and never stays very long. The body is a lighte-ish medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a somewhat fluid feel. Overall, an enjoyable brew. ...And that's all I can really say there...

On-tap at Little Goat. Served in a snifter.

A - Tan foam settles to a collar, wisps, no lace, and lots of tiny bubbles adhering to the sides of the glass. Hazy dark brown body with a hint of transparency to it.

S - Smells like a bourbon barrel-aged cider. Extremely intense bourbon and wood aromas, with tart apple, caramel malt, and some nebulous spices in the periphery; nutmeg? allspice? Gets quite boozy and rough around the edges as it warms up.

T - The taste is quite similar, with loads of bourbon, oak, caramel, tart apple cider, and light vanilla. Doesn't seem to have the characteristic Woodford aroma to it, with more oak and less of that toast coconut and vanillin character. Lightly tangy, sour mash whiskey finish.

M - Medium-full body, chewy texture, with lingering tannins and oak late and only mild residual stickiness. Not much alcohol heat, which is a surprise in relation to the boozy aroma and flavor. Quite viscous. Lower carbonation.

D - Interesting beer; reminded me more of Crispin's Stagger Lee than other barrel-aged beers. Definitely a slow sipper, and perhaps closer to a bourbon-based cocktail with the intensity of the spirit and wood character. Not particularly drinkable, except in small portions; your enjoyment will depend heavily on your love of bourbon.
