As the outdoorsy types in Asheville take time from the trail and find safe haven in the taproom, Catawba brings a bit of the climbing and hiking route into an American pale ale taste. Strongly hopped for a crisp, clean yet smoothly bitter balance, the character of the outdoors brings its bright floral and earthiness of an iconic rock formation to the bar.
The Nose pours with a common golden amber color that's familiar to most pale ale. Its scent is citrusy and earthy with a pungent botanical quality that precedes a malty-sweet taste of caramel, light honey and graham cracker.
As the malt sweetness relaxes, the ale leaves room for the hops to take the lead- grapefruit, orange peel and light lemon round the middle palate while the ale trails with a smooth but bitter crispness of fresh-cut grass, verbena, sassafras and a light berry-like tawng.
Light, crisp and refreshing, the ale retains just enough sweetness to keep the hops tasting juicy, ripe and radiant with their strong fruit impressions. Growing bitterness in the throat take on a ginger-like spiciness with a snappy drinkability. Its an ideal cup o' ale after a day on the trail or with a spicy thai ramen bowl in hand.
