Honest Injun Stout

On draft at Barley's in Asheville. Black pour, smallish tan head. Very roasty aromas, heavy malt and espresso. Good coffee and chocolate flavors, licorice and roast malt as well. Very solid medium body. Drinkable stout. Straight forward, not the most complex, but not bad.

Another consistent winner from CVBC tried on-tap at Barley's. Super dark, creamy head with good retention. A lightly roasted scent with chocolate and a hint of coffee. Good creamy undertones with oatmeal present. Taste is much of the same but lacks the character of a good. Somewhat light on the mouthfeel but this is a smaller Stout so it's easily drinkable. I used to enjoy this much more when I had tried fewer beers but now it doesn't stack up quite as well.

This beer was pitch black with a creamy head. The smell was of roasted grain. There was a lot of lacing left in the glass. The taste was of oatmeal. The mouthfeel was very smooth. The drinkability was high. This is one of the better stouts I have had. I like the stouts that are good but lower in alcohol.

Color was pitch black with a one finger tan head with decent retention. Appearance was about on par for the style. Smell was heavy on the roasted malt side. Lots of coffee in the aroma with a slight chocolate twist. Taste like an espresso mocha combination. Lots of roasted flavors with a mild chocolate finish. More complexity in the taste than I expected. I like my stouts to be thick in the mouth, this one was a little thinner than the top stouts out there. Very drinkable given the 5% abv and the nice complexity of the roasted malts.
Overall a good offering from Catawba Valley. If they were going to do a High Grav beer I would like to see the abv of this one kicked up a notch. This one would be great with an alcohol finish in the taste and the warming a higher abv beer gives.

Pour is black no light getting thru here with a tan head spotty lace. Aroma is light roasted barley, coffee with hints of chocolate. Taste is roasted barley light bitter burnt malt mixed with coffe some chocolate sweetness in the mix. Finishes with a linger bitterness of burnt malt mixed with light grapefruity hops. Mouthfeel is a little light for a stout has a good amount of carbonation thru out which may make it seem lighter then it was. Drinkability is good not the best stout but not bad one either I would order it again.

The beer arrived at the table pitch black and not allowing any light to penetrate the beer. The head was tan and lasted to coat (not lace) the glass.

The aroma was coffee and chocolate with some acidity as well as some sweetness.

The flavor was coffee and chocolate with slight sourness and a very one dimensional flavor. Also a slight licorice flavor.

The finish was dry with very slight coffee. The body was medium.

I got chocolate, coffee, and malt on the nose. The stout presented a medium chocolate brown color. The head was difficult to judge due to the fact I tasted at a festival from basically a large shot glass. The taste was that of sweet chocolate, coffee, and malt. It was a smooth clean finish. Very drinkable and highly enjoyable Stout.

This stout was thin, bland. Had less flavor than a Guiness and no head to make up for it. The thinness of the flavor carried over into a thin mouthfeel that is not appropriate for even a dry stout. This beer alone kept me from trying any of Catawba's other beers.
