Enjoyed at The Common Market at one of their CM.BEER.EDU series tastings with head brewer of CVB, Todd Boera. Leap Day 2012.

A - murky root beer float color with one finger, tan head; can't recall the lacing...

S - play-doh, caraway, burlap, rye, molasses

T - starts out like a BSDA then quickly melts into malt bill of rye and pumpernickel; a rueben-like experience, even a tad bit savory

M - medium bodied with "perfect" carbonation; very mild, malty aftertaste

O - grains are featured here and if you don't like the sound of that then you probably won't like it. it is as-advertised. interesting beer that would pair well with cheese or other food. nice body and mouthfeel.

on-tap at the brewery

Appearance is a somewhat dark brown with a small tan head that quickly recedes to a long lasting ring. No lacing, not too much going on here. A sniff brings in some super sweetness reminiscent of Candi sugar that I can only imagine comes from the molasses and lots of caraway. Very interesting nose. Taste is chock full of caraway (aniseed and licorice) with that dark molassesy sweetness. The dark and peppery rye malt gives this a nice backbone that barely controls the caraway. The mouthfeel is surprisingly light, medium in body, with medium carbonation.

This fulfills its description perfectly: pumpernickel rye bread. An awesome experimental beer that reminds me of my time in Scandinavia with its dark rye and caraway reminiscent of rugbroed and snaps. Would drink again.
