They call this one an Extra Pale ale. It's light, but not remarkably so. It's definitely in the Pale ale family with the hop-forward character. Pours a clear golden color with a modest head in the imperial nonic. Hoppy and sharp. Bitter and light. Aromatic and resiny. That pretty well sums it up in six words.

A refreshing quaff, and fortunately I suspect this is not a one-time brew. I just had it tonight, a year after the first review, from a seemingly fresh keg at California Kebab (Amplified ales) in Pacific Beach.

Tasted at the brewpub and then liked it so much we brought a growler back to the East Coast. 32oz growler split into two imperial pint glasses.

Appearance (4.5): Mostly clear straw with a touch of gold. Huge fluffy white head that sticks around with a thick puffy ring. A slight ring of lacing left at the top of the glass.

Aroma (5): Strong lemon, tangerine and some pine needles. Lots and lots of strong citrus for such a small beer. Smells like Simcoe and/or Citra if I had to guess. Top notch.

Taste (4.5): Orange up front, grapefruit through the middle and pine on the finish. A firm bitterness through the middle and finish but not too much and nicely balanced considering its delicate malt backbone. The hops really shine but not quite as much as in the nose.

Mouthfeel (4): Slick and light. Medium side of low body with medium-high carbonation. A touch thin but that's to be expected for a near-session strength beer. Not a huge drawback overall and very drinkable as a result.

Overall (5): This is a fantastic Pale Ale on par with Zombie Dust and other hugely hoppy Pales (Hoppy Birthday comes to mind...). This one really stood out to me among two full flights of (nearly) all of Coronado's current brewpub offerings, including several heavy hitters. Definitely worth seeking out.
